== Hindu Nationalism: Hindutva, Cultural Revival, and Religious Exclusion ==

Hindu nationalism, commonly associated with the ideology of Hindutva, seeks to define India primarily as the historic homeland of Hindu civilization. Supporters often describe it as a movement for cultural revival, national unity, civilizational confidence, and recovery from centuries of foreign domination. Critics argue that it has increasingly promoted religious majoritarianism, weakened secular institutions, and marginalized religious minorities. The literature on Hindu nationalism spans political science, history, sociology, religious studies, law, and human rights, reflecting both its popularity and its controversies.

=== Historical Origins ===

The collected sources trace Hindu nationalism from early twentieth-century thinkers such as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar through later ideological development within organizations including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). They distinguish Hinduism as a diverse religious tradition from Hindutva as a modern political ideology that connects religion, culture, territory, and national identity.

=== Cultural Revival and Civilizational Identity ===

Many publications examine Hindu nationalism as a movement seeking to restore pride in India's ancient civilization, languages, religious traditions, and historical achievements. These works explore debates over historical memory, cultural heritage, archaeology, education, and India's identity as either a pluralistic republic or a Hindu civilization-state.

=== The BJP, RSS, and Political Development ===

A substantial portion of the material examines the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the influence of the RSS, electoral strategy, organizational growth, welfare politics, leadership under Narendra Modi, and the expansion of Hindu nationalist politics from the political margins to national government.

=== Democracy, Secularism, and Constitutional Debate ===

The sources present competing assessments of India's democratic trajectory. Some argue that Hindu nationalism has contributed to democratic backsliding through restrictions on civil liberties, media, opposition parties, and institutional independence. Others contend that India's democratic institutions remain resilient despite increased political polarization.

=== Muslims, Christians, and Religious Minorities ===

Many articles examine the effects of Hindu nationalism on Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and other minority communities. Frequently discussed topics include citizenship laws, anti-conversion legislation, communal violence, religious freedom, interfaith marriage, vigilante movements, and debates over equal citizenship within a secular constitutional framework.

=== Caste, Social Hierarchy, and Hindu Unity ===

Several studies analyze efforts to build political unity across India's caste divisions while maintaining diverse social traditions. The collection also explores Dalit politics, Adivasi communities, Ambedkar's legacy, caste representation, and continuing debates about equality within Hindu society.

=== Women, Gender, and Family ===

Researchers examine women's participation within Hindu nationalist organizations alongside debates surrounding family law, gender equality, motherhood, demographic concerns, "love jihad," and the symbolic role of women in nationalist narratives.

=== Education, History, and Cultural Authority ===

The bibliography highlights disputes over school curricula, historical interpretation, archaeology, textbooks, ancient scientific achievements, language policy, and competing understandings of India's past. Education is frequently presented as a central arena for shaping national identity.

=== Law, Citizenship, and Public Policy ===

Numerous sources discuss constitutional questions involving the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), anti-conversion laws, Ayodhya, Kashmir, minority protections, bulldozer demolitions, Supreme Court decisions, and the relationship between law and majoritarian politics.

=== Media, Technology, and Public Communication ===

The material explores the role of social media, WhatsApp, digital propaganda, online misinformation, film, television, Bollywood, and cultural production in spreading or challenging Hindu nationalist narratives.

=== Diaspora and Global Hindutva ===

Several publications investigate the international dimensions of Hindu nationalism, including diaspora organizations, advocacy networks, fundraising, transnational political influence, and debates among Hindu communities outside India regarding Hindutva and pluralism.

=== Regional Politics ===

The sources include case studies involving Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Kashmir, Ayodhya, Karnataka, Kerala, and Northeast India, illustrating how Hindu nationalism interacts with regional identities, local politics, migration, and communal relations.

=== Competing Interpretations ===

The collection deliberately includes works representing differing perspectives. Some authors view Hindu nationalism as a legitimate project of civilizational renewal and national integration, while others interpret it as a form of ethnoreligious majoritarianism that challenges constitutional secularism and equal citizenship. Together, these perspectives illustrate the ongoing scholarly and political debate surrounding Hindutva and modern India.

=== Conclusion ===

The collected material presents Hindu nationalism as one of the most influential and contested political movements in contemporary India. It examines its historical foundations, ideological evolution, political institutions, cultural aspirations, social consequences, and international reach. Rather than presenting a single interpretation, the collection documents the diverse scholarly, journalistic, legal, and policy debates surrounding Hindutva, democracy, religious identity, cultural revival, and the future of India's pluralistic constitutional order.

| B. R. Ambedkar | Self-Published | 1936] Challenges caste hierarchy and

equal nation. Ambedkar’s analysis complicates Hindu nationalist appeals
to cultural unity by emphasizing oppression and exclusion within Hindu
social structures.

=====Why I Am Not a Hindu===== [https://samaj.revues.org/3702 | Kancha
Ilaiah Shepherd | Samya | 1996] Critiques Brahmanical definitions of
Hindu culture from a Dalit-Bahujan perspective. The work argues that

| Thomas Crowley | Socialist Register | May 15, 2019] Examines the

nationalist development campaigns can conceal persistent unemployment,
inequality, informal labor, and unequal access to economic opportunity.

=====The Political Economy of Hindu Nationalism in India=====
[https://pure.royalholloway.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/23809529/JA_Thesis_PEHN_J%20an_13_2015.pdf

challenges interpretations that treat Hindutva as purely cultural by
placing it within wider changes in capitalism and state power.

=====Indian Nationalism and the Historical Fantasy of a Golden Hindu
Period=====
[https://www.cato.org/policy-analysis/indian-nationalism-historical-fantasy-golden-hindu-period
| Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar | Cato Institute | 2023] Critiques
claims that India enjoyed uninterrupted economic supremacy under ancient

The article argues that selective economic statistics are used to
construct a politically useful but historically misleading golden age.

=== Heritage, Archaeology, and Sacred Geography === =====India’s New
Iconoclasts=====

Dalrymple | Engelsberg Ideas | May 27, 2025] Examines Hindu nationalist
hostility toward monuments, place names, and historical narratives
associated with India’s Muslim past. The essay argues that contemporary
campaigns against Islamic heritage are shaped less by ancient hatreds
than by modern efforts to redefine national identity.

=====A Many-Cornered Thing: The Role of Heritage in Indian
Nation-Building=====

Brian Hole | Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding | 2013] Examines
the contested role of monuments, archaeological remains, sacred sites,
and cultural property in Indian national identity. Hindu nationalist
organizations have used heritage to promote communal narratives, but
regional, minority, secular, and professional groups continue to
challenge those interpretations.

=====Creating Suitable Evidence of the Past? Archaeology and
Hindutva===== [https://journals.openedition.org/samaj/6926 | Anne-Julie
Etter | South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal | 2020] Studies

| Larissa Förster and Others | boasblogs | July 14, 2019] Examines
campaigns to return religious statues and cultural objects taken from
India during colonialism or through illegal trafficking. Restitution can
correct historical injustice, but nationalist rhetoric may treat objects
as the exclusive property of a homogeneous Hindu nation.

=====Digging for a Hindu Nation=====
[https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2018/05/10/digging-for-the-hindu-nation/
| Rachel A. Varghese | London School of Economics South Asia Centre |

Hindu nationalist efforts to prove ancient territorial and cultural
claims. The article shows how scientific authority can be selectively
used to transform mythology and political ideology into apparently
objective historical evidence.

=====Archaeology and the Ayodhya Dispute=====
[https://www.jstor.org/stable/4400028 | D. Mandal | Economic and
Political Weekly | December 1993] Examines archaeological claims made
during the campaign to replace the Babri mosque with a Ram temple. The
dispute demonstrates how excavation reports, architectural fragments,
religious traditions, and historical interpretation became tools of mass
political mobilization.

=====Communalizing Archaeology: The Ayodhya Dispute=====
[https://www.jstor.org/stable/4398989 | Romila Thapar | Economic and
Political Weekly | August 29, 1992] Criticizes attempts to use
archaeology as definitive proof of religious ownership at Ayodhya.
Thapar argues that historical evidence must be assessed through
scholarly methods rather than organized around the political demands of
contemporary religious communities.

Neoliberalism, and Hindu Nationalism=====

| Audrey Truschke | The Revealer | May 8, 2024] Reviews changes to
school textbooks involving the Mughal Empire, the Babri mosque, caste,
religious violence, and democratic protest. The article argues that
deleting uncomfortable history helps portray Hindu civilization as
eternally unified and Muslims as marginal to India’s national story.

Textbooks=====

Indigenous origins that have entered schools and public debate.

=====Rewriting History: The Ongoing Controversy Over Textbooks in
India=====
[https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2016/06/01/rewriting-history-the-ongoing-controversy-over-textbooks-in-india/
| Deepa Nair | London School of Economics South Asia Centre | June 1,
2016] Traces recurring efforts by Hindu nationalist governments to
revise school curricula. These campaigns often glorify an imagined Vedic
golden age, minimize caste conflict, and portray medieval Muslim rulers
mainly as invaders who interrupted an otherwise unified Hindu
civilization.

=====Communalisation of Education: The History Textbook Controversy=====
[https://www.jstor.org/stable/4411416 | Irfan Habib, Suvira Jaiswal and
Aditya Mukherjee | Economic and Political Weekly | December 2001]

government. The authors argue that professional historical research was
displaced by religious mythology and ideological claims intended to
present India’s past as an enduring Hindu-Muslim conflict.

=== Gender, Family, and Religious Nationalism === =====Gender and the
“Faith” in Law: Equality, Secularism, and the Rise of the Hindu
Nation=====
[https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-law-and-religion/article/gender-and-the-faith-in-law-equality-secularism-and-the-rise-of-the-hindu-nation/C5E07F5372F318B2A95D6C6B89CB2993
| Ratna Kapur | Journal of Law and Religion | 2020] Examines how Hindu

the movement promotes idealized roles for Hindu women as dutiful wives,
mothers, and guardians of religious identity.

=====Introduction: Women of Hindu Rashtra=====
[https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/women-gender-and-religious-nationalism/introduction-women-of-hindu-rashtra/EFE99B30BB49C5E4F95E62440776233D

Introduces research on women’s participation in Hindu nationalist
organizations and the gendered stories through which Hindutva imagines
the nation. Narratives of heroic queens, violated Hindu women, dangerous
Muslim men, motherhood, honor, and sacrifice help transform gender
anxiety into political mobilization.

=====Women, Gender and Religious Nationalism in India=====
[https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/women-gender-and-religious-nationalism/7D1B683AC1E936724C68684EFB380D38
| Amrita Basu and Tanika Sarkar | Cambridge University Press | 2022]

patriarchal expectations about sexuality, family, caste, and religious
duty.

=====Women in the Hindu Nation=====
[https://www.jstor.org/stable/4409404 | Tanika Sarkar | Economic and
Political Weekly | October 1991] Explores the place assigned to women
within Hindu nationalist visions of community and nation. Women are
celebrated as powerful symbols of cultural purity and national
motherhood but are frequently denied autonomy when their personal
choices conflict with collective religious interests.

=====Hindu Nationalist Women: Ideology, Mobilization and Political
Participation===== [https://www.jstor.org/stable/4404679 | Paola
Bacchetta | Economic and Political Weekly | March 1993] Examines women’s

reproduce Hindutva ideology while negotiating political authority inside
a movement committed to socially conservative gender roles.

service organizations help produce collective Hindu political identity
across divisions of region, caste, language, and practice. Schools,
welfare programs, disaster relief, temples, and volunteer networks can
make Hindu nationalism part of ordinary community life.

=====Recovering the Dalit Public Sphere: Vernacular Liberalism in North
India=====

| David Mosse | Modern Asian Studies | 2020] Challenges the belief that
economic development and markets naturally eliminate caste. The article
shows how caste networks continue shaping labor, credit, business,
education, and social opportunity, complicating nationalist accounts
that portray caste divisions as relics already overcome by Hindu unity.

=====Hindutva and Dalits: Perspectives for Understanding Communal
Praxis===== [https://www.jstor.org/stable/4408097 | Anand Teltumbde |
Economic and Political Weekly | February 1999] Examines why some Dalits
participate in Hindu nationalist organizations despite the persistence
of caste discrimination. The article considers political patronage,
social insecurity, religious mobilization, and the use of anti-Muslim
conflict to create a temporary sense of Hindu unity.

=====Hindutva’s Social Engineering and the Dalit Question=====
[https://www.jstor.org/stable/40276561 | Badri Narayan | Economic and
Political Weekly | 2009] Studies how Hindu nationalist organizations
appropriate Dalit heroes, local gods, community histories, and cultural
traditions. These strategies expand the BJP’s social base while
reframing anticaste memories as parts of a unified Hindu struggle
against external religious enemies.

=== Elections, Voters, and Political Mobilization === =====“Willing”
Ethnic Nationalists, Diffusion, and Resentment in India=====
[https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/modern-asian-studies/article/willing-ethnicnationalists-diffusion-and-resentment-in-india-a-microfoundational-account/D007415FEFC3EB53323CFF2CEAE9036D
| Aseema Sinha | Modern Asian Studies | 2023] Uses interviews with
middle-class voters to examine how exclusionary nationalist ideas spread
through ordinary social interaction. Support for Hindutva emerges
through different combinations of resentment, media exposure, perceived
cultural humiliation, economic aspiration, and attachment to prestigious
political figures.

Elections=====
[https://www.cfr.org/articles/ethnic-and-caste-politics-hindu-nationalism-and-indian-elections

allowed the BJP to unite many distinct caste constituencies while
retaining important support among upper-caste and middle-class voters.

=====India’s Watershed Vote: Hindu Nationalism in Power?=====
[https://www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/indias-watershed-vote-hindu-nationalism-in-power/
