== Revisionist Zionism and the Israeli Right ==

Revisionist Zionism emerged in the 1920s as a major alternative to the dominant Labor Zionist movement. Associated above all with Ze'ev Jabotinsky, it emphasized explicit Jewish statehood, large-scale Jewish immigration, political pressure on the British authorities, national self-defense, military preparedness, and a more assertive approach to achieving Jewish sovereignty. Over the following century, organizations and political parties descended from or influenced by Revisionism became central to the development of the Israeli right.

The history of Revisionist Zionism is not simply the history of a single, unchanging ideology. The movement contained competing liberal, nationalist, militant, territorial, economic, and sometimes authoritarian tendencies. Jabotinsky himself combined uncompromising advocacy of Jewish national sovereignty with arguments for individual liberty, constitutional government, and political rights for minorities. Later Revisionists and their political descendants interpreted different elements of this inheritance in substantially different ways.

=== Jabotinsky and the Origins of Revisionist Zionism ===

Ze'ev Jabotinsky emerged as one of the most influential challengers to the leadership and strategy of mainstream Zionism during the British Mandate period. Dissatisfied with gradualist policies and what he regarded as insufficiently explicit demands for Jewish sovereignty, he helped establish organized Revisionist Zionism in 1925.

Revisionists called for a clearly stated political objective of Jewish statehood and advocated accelerated Jewish immigration. They also placed unusual emphasis on Jewish military preparedness and self-defense. Jabotinsky's movement consequently developed a political culture markedly different from that of the socialist institutions that dominated much of the Zionist movement and the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine.

Jabotinsky's ideas developed in the broader political environment of late imperial Russia and interwar Europe. His writings addressed nationalism, citizenship, minority rights, state power, Jewish security, and the relationship between national self-determination and multinational societies.

Revisionism itself was internally diverse. Historical scholarship has emphasized disagreements among parliamentary nationalists, youth activists, militants, maximalists, liberals, and figures attracted to authoritarian political ideas. This diversity complicates attempts to describe all Revisionist Zionism through a single ideological label.

=== The Iron Wall, Nationalism, and Liberalism ===

One of Jabotinsky's most influential arguments appeared in his concept of the "Iron Wall." He maintained that Palestinian Arabs could not reasonably be expected voluntarily to accept a Zionist project that would transform the political and demographic character of Palestine. Jewish national development therefore required sufficient strength to make the defeat of Zionism impossible before a durable political accommodation could emerge.

The doctrine became one of the most frequently debated elements of Jabotinsky's political legacy. Supporters have interpreted it as an argument for deterrence and political realism. Critics have viewed it as an intellectual foundation for coercive approaches toward Palestinians and for later Israeli doctrines emphasizing overwhelming military strength.

Yet Jabotinsky's political thought also contained an important liberal dimension. He wrote about individual liberty, democratic government, citizenship, and political equality for minorities within a future Jewish state. This combination of assertive nationalism and liberal constitutional ideas created a tension that remained important throughout the subsequent history of the Israeli right.

Modern political arguments over Jabotinsky frequently center on which aspect of his legacy deserves greater emphasis. Some portray him principally as the ideological father of territorial nationalism and Israeli security doctrine, while others emphasize his secularism, liberalism, minority-rights arguments, and opposition to unrestricted government power.

=== Betar, Militancy, and the Revisionist Underground ===

The Betar youth movement became one of the principal institutions for transmitting Revisionist political culture. Founded in Riga, it promoted Jewish national pride, Hebrew culture, discipline, political activism, self-defense, and military preparedness. Betar became particularly influential among Jewish youth in Eastern Europe.

During the British Mandate, militant organizations associated with the Revisionist political environment became increasingly important. The Irgun developed as an armed underground organization and eventually came under the leadership of Menachem Begin. Lehi, which split from the Irgun, represented an even more radical militant nationalist current.

The relationship among Jabotinsky, mainstream Revisionism, the underground organizations, and radical Revisionist factions was complex. Scholars have debated the extent to which authoritarian or fascist ideas influenced portions of the movement. Some Revisionist activists showed admiration for aspects of European authoritarian nationalism, while other scholarship stresses the substantial ideological differences between Jabotinsky's own political philosophy and fascism.

These controversies remain central to historical arguments about Revisionism. They also illustrate why distinctions among Jabotinsky's writings, organized Revisionism, radical Revisionist factions, Betar, Irgun, and Lehi are important when assessing the movement's political history.

=== Menachem Begin, Irgun, and Herut ===

Menachem Begin became the critical figure linking the pre-state Revisionist tradition to parliamentary politics in Israel. A former Betar leader and commander of the Irgun, Begin founded Herut after Israeli independence.

Herut became the principal political home of the Revisionist right. Initially isolated from the political establishment dominated by Mapai and Labor Zionism, Begin spent decades constructing a parliamentary opposition capable of challenging Labor's dominance.

The transition from underground organization to political party also required ideological and strategic adaptation. Herut retained important elements of Revisionist nationalism while increasingly operating within democratic parliamentary institutions and broadening its appeal beyond the original Revisionist constituency.

Begin's political identity combined nationalism with a strong emphasis on parliamentary democracy, opposition rights, legal restraints on government, and Jewish historical memory. These themes became important to later arguments about what constituted the authentic political inheritance of Jabotinsky and Revisionism.

=== From Herut and Gahal to Likud ===

Herut's gradual movement from political isolation toward governmental power transformed the Israeli right. In 1965, Herut joined with the Liberal Party to form Gahal, creating a broader center-right political bloc.

The creation of Likud in 1973 expanded this coalition further. Although Revisionist-derived Herut remained a major ideological and organizational component, Likud brought together political traditions that were not identical to classical Revisionism.

This process illustrates the increasing importance of pragmatism within the Israeli right. A movement that originated as an ideological challenge to mainstream Zionism evolved into a broad electoral coalition seeking to govern a socially and politically diverse country.

The transformation culminated in the election of 1977, known as the ''Mahapach'', or political upheaval, when Begin and Likud ended decades of Labor-led political dominance.

=== The 1977 Political Revolution ===

Likud's victory in 1977 represented one of the decisive turning points in Israeli political history. Revisionism, once marginalized by the dominant Zionist establishment, had produced the political movement that now governed Israel.

The victory reflected more than ideological support for Revisionism. Begin successfully expanded the right's constituency, drawing support from groups that felt economically, culturally, socially, or politically marginalized by the Labor establishment.

The change transformed Israel's party system and altered debates over economics, religion, settlements, security, territorial compromise, and relations with Palestinians and neighboring Arab states.

Begin's government also demonstrated the tension between ideology and political pragmatism. Despite his deep Revisionist background and attachment to the Land of Israel, Begin negotiated the Camp David Accords and the peace treaty with Egypt, accepting Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula in exchange for peace.

=== Territory and the Evolution of Revisionist Nationalism ===

Territorial nationalism was an important component of Revisionist politics, but its meaning changed substantially over time. Early Revisionists used the slogan of Jewish sovereignty on both banks of the Jordan River, incorporating territory east of the river into their political vision.

Later Revisionist politics largely abandoned claims to Transjordan. Territorial nationalism increasingly concentrated on the territory west of the Jordan River and, particularly after 1967, on the West Bank.

This transformation demonstrates that even apparently fundamental nationalist doctrines were capable of revision. Political circumstances, wars, demographic realities, international pressures, and electoral considerations repeatedly altered how Revisionist-derived parties interpreted territorial principles.

The resulting debate between ideological territorial maximalism and pragmatic compromise became one of the recurring divisions within Likud and the wider Israeli right.

=== Shamir, Sharon, and the Transformation of the Right ===

Yitzhak Shamir represented one of the strongest surviving connections between the pre-state militant nationalist underground and later Israeli government. His political career reflected a particularly uncompromising approach to territorial and security questions.

Ariel Sharon represented a different trajectory. A military commander, settlement advocate, and major figure in Likud politics, Sharon became closely associated with the expansion of Israeli settlements. Yet as prime minister he ultimately pursued unilateral disengagement from Gaza and dismantled Israeli settlements there.

Sharon's break with Likud demonstrated how territorial policy could divide the Israeli right even after Revisionist-derived politics had become part of the political establishment.

Other politicians raised within Revisionist or Likud families underwent similar ideological changes. These developments reinforced the distinction between historical political ancestry and the policies eventually pursued by individual Israeli leaders.

=== Benjamin Netanyahu and the Revisionist Inheritance ===

Benjamin Netanyahu became the dominant figure of the Israeli right in the decades surrounding the beginning of the twenty-first century. His relationship to Revisionist Zionism is both political and familial. His father, Benzion Netanyahu, was deeply connected to the Revisionist intellectual tradition.

Netanyahu has repeatedly invoked Jabotinsky and presented him as an important ideological predecessor. Themes associated with Revisionist thought—including Jewish self-reliance, military strength, deterrence, skepticism toward adversaries, diplomatic pressure, and insistence on Jewish sovereignty—can be found throughout Netanyahu's political rhetoric.

At the same time, scholars and commentators disagree over how closely Netanyahu's politics correspond to Jabotinsky's. Some identify substantial continuity between the two, particularly in their emphasis on security and political realism. Others argue that Netanyahu and contemporary Likud have departed from Jabotinsky's liberal commitments, especially regarding minority rights, institutional restraints, and the character of democratic government.

The debate demonstrates how Jabotinsky functions not merely as a historical figure but as a contested political symbol within modern Israel.

=== Likud, Settlements, and the Contemporary Israeli Right ===

The rise of Likud permanently altered Israeli politics. Revisionist political traditions that had once occupied the margins became embedded in the country's governing institutions.

Settlement policy became one of the most consequential areas in which the Israeli right exercised its new political influence. Likud governments generally provided greater political support for settlement in territories captured in 1967, although different Likud leaders varied significantly in their willingness to accept territorial withdrawal.

Over time, the Israeli right also became broader than the Revisionist tradition from which Likud emerged. Religious Zionist parties, settler organizations, ultra-Orthodox parties, national conservatives, secular nationalists, economic liberals, and populist movements developed overlapping but distinct political agendas.

Consequently, "the Israeli right" and "Revisionist Zionism" should not be treated as interchangeable concepts. Revisionism provided an important ideological and organizational foundation, but contemporary right-wing Israeli politics incorporates political traditions that developed independently of Jabotinsky.

=== Revisionism, Fascism, and Historical Controversy ===

One of the most contested questions in Revisionist historiography concerns the movement's relationship to European fascism and authoritarian nationalism during the interwar period.

Certain radical Revisionists, particularly figures associated with Revisionist maximalism, adopted ideas, language, or political forms influenced by contemporary authoritarian movements. Historians have examined these currents and their relationship to the broader Revisionist movement.

Other scholarship cautions against extending the political positions of these factions to Jabotinsky or Revisionism as a whole. Jabotinsky's writings on parliamentary democracy, individual rights, citizenship, and minority protections complicate attempts to classify his political thought simply as fascist.

The historical debate therefore concerns both documented radical currents within Revisionism and disagreements about how representative those currents were of the larger movement.

=== The Far Right and Religious Nationalism ===

The growth of religious nationalism and the far right has further complicated Revisionism's political inheritance. Some contemporary movements share Revisionism's emphasis on Jewish sovereignty, territorial claims, and national strength while deriving their ideas from substantially different religious and ideological traditions.

Kahanism, for example, developed outside classical Revisionism and advanced ideas that cannot simply be equated with Jabotinsky's secular nationalist tradition. Nevertheless, Kahanist and other radical nationalist movements now operate within the broader political environment of the Israeli right.

Coalitions involving Likud, religious-nationalist parties, and far-right politicians have consequently raised new questions about the relationship between the contemporary right and the older Jabotinsky-Begin tradition.

Critics argue that portions of the modern right have retained Revisionism's nationalism while abandoning its liberal elements. Supporters and competing interpreters dispute this characterization and continue to invoke Jabotinsky in debates over democracy, security, sovereignty, minority rights, and the future of Israel.

=== The Continuing Legacy of Revisionist Zionism ===

Revisionist Zionism's historical importance extends far beyond the organization founded by Jabotinsky in 1925. Its institutions and political descendants helped produce Betar, the Revisionist underground tradition, Herut, Gahal, and ultimately Likud.

Its political trajectory was remarkable. Revisionists moved from opposition within the Zionist movement, to conflict with the Labor-led establishment, to decades of parliamentary opposition, and finally to governmental power. By the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, political movements descended from Revisionism had become central to Israeli politics.

Yet political success also transformed Revisionism. Territorial doctrines changed, electoral constituencies broadened, alliances shifted, and ideological principles were repeatedly adapted to the requirements of governing.

Revisionism therefore represents both a specific historical movement and a contested political inheritance. Jabotinsky, Begin, Shamir, Sharon, and Netanyahu represent different stages in that history rather than a single uninterrupted ideological position.

=== Conclusion ===

The history of Revisionist Zionism provides one of the principal pathways for understanding the emergence and development of the Israeli right. Beginning with Jabotinsky's challenge to mainstream Zionism, Revisionism developed institutions, youth movements, underground organizations, political parties, and ideological traditions that profoundly influenced the State of Israel.

Its most enduring themes include Jewish sovereignty, national self-defense, military strength, skepticism toward political concessions made from weakness, and a strong attachment to Jewish national identity. At the same time, Jabotinsky and parts of the Revisionist tradition articulated commitments to individual liberty, democratic institutions, and minority rights that complicate simple descriptions of the movement.

The movement's descendants also repeatedly modified Revisionist doctrine. Begin combined Revisionist nationalism with parliamentary politics and territorial compromise with Egypt. Shamir maintained a more uncompromising territorial outlook. Sharon moved from settlement expansion to unilateral withdrawal. Netanyahu has invoked Revisionist security and nationalist themes while becoming the focal point of debates about whether contemporary Likud preserves or departs from Jabotinsky's broader political philosophy.

Revisionist Zionism therefore cannot be understood solely as an ideology frozen in the interwar period. It became a changing political tradition whose competing interpretations helped shape Herut, Likud, Israeli security debates, settlement politics, territorial nationalism, and the wider Israeli right. Its legacy remains contested precisely because different political movements continue to claim, reinterpret, criticize, and redefine it.
