Social Darwinism and eugenics were related but distinct movements that applied ideas about evolution, heredity, competition, and biological fitness to human societies. Social Darwinists often presented social inequality, imperial expansion, racial hierarchy, and economic competition as natural consequences of evolutionary struggle. Charles Darwin developed the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection, but the political ideology later called Social Darwinism was not a straightforward application of Darwin’s work. === The American Eugenics Movement ===

The American eugenics movement developed through universities, laboratories, museums, medical institutions, government agencies, professional organizations, and private foundations. The Eugenics Record Office collected family histories and pedigrees intended to demonstrate the inheritance of traits such as poverty, criminality, disability, and sexual behavior.

Studies including ''The Kallikak Family'', ''The Jukes'', and ''The Tribe of Ishmael'' portrayed marginalized families as evidence of hereditary degeneration. These accounts frequently relied on poor evidence, biased interpretations, moral judgments, and the confusion of social conditions with genetic inheritance.

Intelligence testing also became connected to eugenics. Tests administered to immigrants and military recruits were influenced by language, education, culture, and testing conditions. Nevertheless, their results were used to claim that particular national, racial, or social groups possessed inferior intelligence.

Eugenic propaganda reached the public through exhibitions, textbooks, pamphlets, “Better Babies” competitions, and “Fitter Families” contests. Participants were measured and ranked according to standards of health, intelligence, morality, appearance, and hereditary worth.

Nazi Germany transformed eugenics and racial hygiene into central principles of government. The 1933 Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring created hereditary-health courts and authorized mass compulsory sterilization. Scientific organizations and universities have increasingly investigated their involvement in eugenics and reconsidered institutional names, memorials, archives, curricula, and responsibilities to affected communities.

Modern genetic counseling generally emphasizes informed consent and nondirective decision-making. Newborn screening and gene therapy seek to prevent or treat disease rather than eliminate categories of people. Nevertheless, prenatal screening, embryo selection, polygenic scores, germline editing, and human enhancement raise concerns about inequality, disability discrimination, parental pressure, and the meaning of voluntary choice.

The expressivist objection holds that routinely selecting against disability may communicate that people living with those conditions are less valuable. Proposals for “liberal eugenics” ask whether individually chosen reproductive selection differs morally from state-directed eugenics. Critics note that private decisions still occur within societies shaped by ableism, racism, economic inequality, commercial pressure, and unequal access to health care.
