== The African National Congress and Anti-Apartheid Resistance ==

The African National Congress (ANC) became the most influential political organization in the long struggle against racial segregation and apartheid in South Africa. Founded in 1912 as the South African Native National Congress, the organization initially relied heavily on petitions, delegations, constitutional appeals, and political advocacy. Over succeeding decades, however, changing political conditions and increasingly restrictive racial legislation transformed both the ANC and the character of African resistance. By the middle of the twentieth century, a younger generation of activists was pressing the organization toward mass mobilization, civil disobedience, strikes, boycotts, and other forms of direct political action. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The ANC's history was not a simple progression from peaceful protest to armed resistance. Its struggle incorporated mass political campaigns, underground organization, labor and community activism, international diplomacy, sanctions campaigns, political imprisonment, military activity, and eventually negotiations. Organizations outside the ANC also played major roles in challenging apartheid, while the ANC itself frequently operated through alliances with trade unions, Indian and Coloured political organizations, women's organizations, civic groups, students, religious organizations, and international solidarity movements.

=== Origins of the ANC and African Resistance ===

The ANC emerged from an established tradition of African political organization and opposition to colonial dispossession and racial discrimination. Early African organizations used petitions, conferences, delegations, newspapers, and other political methods to challenge the exclusion of Black South Africans from political power. The creation of the South African Native National Congress in 1912 sought to establish a national organization capable of representing African political interests.

The 1913 Natives Land Act and other discriminatory measures reinforced the need for organized national resistance. During the 1920s and 1930s, however, the ANC experienced periods of organizational weakness while African politics expanded through trade unions, rural resistance, communist activism, and competing political movements. The organization underwent an important revival during the 1940s as leaders attempted to modernize its structures and younger activists demanded more militant political action. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

The ANC Youth League became particularly important in this transformation. Figures including Anton Lembede, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Oliver Tambo represented a generation that sought to replace reliance on petitions with boycotts, strikes, civil disobedience, and mass mobilization. The resulting Programme of Action helped establish the foundations for the major resistance campaigns of the 1950s.

=== Mass Resistance and the Defiance Campaign ===

The 1950s marked the ANC's emergence as a mass resistance movement. The 1952 Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws deliberately challenged discriminatory apartheid regulations through organized civil disobedience. Volunteers knowingly violated apartheid restrictions and accepted arrest, transforming resistance from primarily elite political advocacy into coordinated grassroots action.

The campaign also demonstrated the importance of cooperation between different communities. The ANC worked with the South African Indian Congress and other organizations, helping develop the broader Congress Alliance. Activists such as Yusuf Dadoo, Yusuf Cachalia, Ahmed Kathrada, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and ANC president Albert Luthuli became prominent figures in this expanding resistance movement. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

The Defiance Campaign did not destroy apartheid legislation, but it expanded political participation, increased ANC membership and demonstrated the potential of disciplined mass resistance. It also contributed to a political tradition in which boycotts, strikes, demonstrations, civil disobedience, and community organization became central methods of challenging white minority rule.

=== Freedom Charter, Congress Alliance and Women's Resistance ===

The Congress Alliance broadened opposition to apartheid by bringing together organizations representing different racial and political constituencies. Its most important political statement was the Freedom Charter, adopted at the Congress of the People at Kliptown in June 1955.

The Charter envisioned a democratic and nonracial South Africa and became one of the defining documents of the ANC-led liberation movement. Its creation followed a nationwide effort to gather political demands from communities across the country. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

The apartheid government responded to the growing Congress movement with repression. In the Treason Trial beginning in 1956, 156 activists were accused of treason, reflecting the state's attempt to criminalize organized opposition. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

Women also became increasingly important participants and leaders in resistance. The ANC Women's League and allied organizations mobilized against pass laws and other discriminatory policies. Leaders including Lilian Ngoyi, Albertina Sisulu and other women associated with the Congress movement helped organize one of the era's defining protests, the 1956 Women's March against pass laws. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

=== Sharpeville, Banning and Armed Resistance ===

The political environment changed dramatically after the Sharpeville massacre of 21 March 1960. The killing of protesters intensified South Africa's political crisis, and the government banned both the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress. The ANC was forced underground and increasingly operated through clandestine networks and exile structures. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

As legal and peaceful avenues of resistance were increasingly closed, ANC and allied activists established uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). The armed organization initially concentrated on sabotage while attempting to avoid loss of life. Nelson Mandela later explained the circumstances surrounding this strategic change in his famous statement from the dock during the Rivonia Trial.

The arrest of underground leaders at Liliesleaf Farm and the subsequent Rivonia Trial severely damaged the internal resistance network. Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki and other defendants received life sentences. Many additional activists were imprisoned, banned, driven underground, or forced into exile. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

=== Oliver Tambo, Exile and International Resistance ===

With much of the internal leadership imprisoned or underground, Oliver Tambo became one of the central figures in maintaining and rebuilding the ANC abroad. Under exile conditions, the movement developed diplomatic networks, international fundraising, military structures, political education, and relationships with governments and solidarity organizations.

International resistance became one of the major fronts in the struggle against apartheid. Anti-apartheid organizations campaigned for economic sanctions, consumer boycotts, sporting isolation, cultural boycotts, arms restrictions, and the release of political prisoners. The United Nations and international solidarity organizations increasingly challenged South Africa's racial system, while ANC representatives worked to build political legitimacy abroad. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

The ANC also received varying forms of political, educational, diplomatic, and military assistance from foreign governments and liberation allies. Exile nevertheless presented major difficulties, including maintaining organizational unity, training activists, rebuilding underground networks inside South Africa, and developing strategies capable of connecting external operations with domestic resistance.

=== Wankie, Morogoro and Reconstruction ===

The setbacks of the 1960s forced the ANC and MK to reassess their strategy. Military campaigns such as Wankie exposed organizational and logistical weaknesses, while the 1969 Morogoro Conference became an important moment of internal debate and reconstruction.

Morogoro reaffirmed the Freedom Charter while reconsidering the relationship among political mobilization, underground organization, armed struggle, and international activity. These approaches eventually developed into complementary components of ANC strategy rather than isolated forms of resistance. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

The exile movement subsequently worked to rebuild connections with activists inside South Africa, develop MK's capabilities, expand international support, and prepare new generations of political and military cadres.

=== Revival of Resistance in the 1970s and 1980s ===

Resistance inside South Africa expanded dramatically during the 1970s and 1980s. The 1976 Soweto uprising became a major turning point, producing a new generation of activists and contributing to increased recruitment into liberation organizations. :contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}

During the 1980s, resistance expanded through civic associations, student organizations, trade unions, religious groups, community organizations, underground ANC networks, and organizations such as the United Democratic Front. The UDF brought together hundreds of organizations and became an important vehicle for mass opposition to apartheid.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions strengthened the role of organized labor, while the Mass Democratic Movement helped sustain resistance after government restrictions were imposed on other organizations. At the same time, MK operations and underground ANC activity continued. Operation Vula represented an ambitious attempt to establish senior underground leadership and secure communications within South Africa. :contentReference[oaicite:11]{index=11}

By the second half of the 1980s, apartheid faced interconnected pressures from township revolt, strikes, political organization, international sanctions, armed resistance, economic difficulties, and growing diplomatic isolation.

=== Women, Activists and Political Leadership ===

The ANC struggle depended on a large network of organizers, political prisoners, underground activists, military cadres, diplomats, trade unionists, intellectuals, community leaders, and international campaigners. Prominent figures included Chris Hani, Joe Slovo, Alfred Nzo, Moses Kotane, Moses Mabhida, Joe Modise, Thabo Mbeki, Mac Maharaj, Ronnie Kasrils, Joe Gqabi, Solomon Mahlangu, Albie Sachs, Ruth First, and Denis Goldberg. :contentReference[oaicite:12]{index=12}

Women participated throughout the liberation struggle as organizers, underground operatives, prisoners, diplomats, military participants, and community leaders. Ruth Mompati, Gertrude Shope, Florence Mophosho, Dorothy Nyembe, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Barbara Hogan, Ray Alexander Simons, Frances Baard, Bertha Gxowa, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, and Amina Cachalia were among the many women represented in the history of resistance contained in the source material. :contentReference[oaicite:13]{index=13}

Their experiences demonstrate that anti-apartheid resistance extended far beyond the most internationally recognized ANC leaders and depended upon political networks operating inside South Africa, in prisons, underground, and throughout exile.

=== International Solidarity, Boycotts and Sanctions ===

International opposition became increasingly important in isolating apartheid South Africa. The United Nations documented racial repression and supported international action against apartheid, while campaigns sought arms restrictions, economic pressure, cultural isolation, and sporting boycotts.

International legal opposition also contributed to defining apartheid as an international crime. Boycott movements encouraged consumers to avoid South African products, while sporting campaigns challenged South Africa's participation in international competitions and cultural campaigns urged performers not to appear in the country. :contentReference[oaicite:14]{index=14}

These campaigns interacted with domestic resistance rather than functioning independently of it. International organizations frequently responded to appeals from South African liberation movements, while the ANC's exile leadership worked to convert international sympathy into sustained diplomatic, political, and economic pressure.

=== From Armed Struggle to Negotiations ===

By the late 1980s, resistance and negotiation increasingly developed alongside one another. Informal meetings between ANC leaders in exile and South African businesspeople, academics, political figures, journalists, and civil-society representatives helped reduce barriers between previously isolated political forces. The 1987 Dakar Conference and the 1989 Harare Declaration reflected growing efforts to define conditions for a negotiated settlement. :contentReference[oaicite:15]{index=15}

The ANC was unbanned in 1990 and Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment. Formal negotiations followed, including the Groote Schuur Minute, Pretoria Minute, CODESA negotiations, and later multiparty negotiations.

The transition remained extremely violent and uncertain. Events including the Boipatong massacre, Bisho massacre, and assassination of Chris Hani threatened the negotiating process. Nevertheless, negotiations eventually produced an interim constitutional framework for South Africa's first national nonracial democratic election. :contentReference[oaicite:16]{index=16}

=== Democratic Transition and the 1994 Election ===

South Africa's April 1994 election represented the political culmination of decades of resistance to apartheid and negotiations over its replacement. Millions of South Africans who had previously been excluded from meaningful national political participation were able to vote, and the ANC emerged as the governing party. :contentReference[oaicite:17]{index=17}

Nelson Mandela became president and a Government of National Unity was established. The transition transformed the ANC from a liberation movement that had operated through legal campaigns, underground structures, prisons, exile, international diplomacy, and armed struggle into South Africa's governing political party.

=== Conclusion ===

The African National Congress occupied a central position in South Africa's long struggle against apartheid, but its success cannot be understood solely through the actions of a few famous leaders or through any single method of resistance. The movement evolved repeatedly in response to changing circumstances: from petitions and constitutional appeals to mass civil disobedience, underground organization, armed resistance, international diplomacy, sanctions campaigns, popular mobilization, and ultimately negotiations.

The wider anti-apartheid struggle was even broader. Women's organizations, trade unions, students, civic associations, religious groups, political prisoners, international solidarity movements, neighboring states, and numerous organizations outside the ANC contributed to the sustained pressure on apartheid.

The ANC's experience illustrates how liberation movements can change substantially over time. Its history encompassed peaceful protest and sabotage, domestic mass politics and exile, political imprisonment and diplomacy, confrontation and negotiation. The eventual democratic transition of 1994 emerged from this complex interaction of internal resistance, international pressure, political organization, state crisis, and negotiated compromise.
