Christian nationalism is a modern concept, but debates over its historical origins frequently reach back to colonial America. The colonial period produced religious and political traditions that later generations used when constructing ideas about the United States as a Christian nation, a chosen people, or a country with a special divine mission.

The connection, however, is not simple or direct. The British colonies did not share a single religious system, and there was no unified American nation during most of the colonial period. Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and other colonies developed different relationships among churches, governments, religious minorities, Indigenous peoples, and political authority.

Modern scholars therefore distinguish between the religious societies created by some colonial settlers and the later ideology generally described as Christian nationalism. Puritan New England was not the modern United States, and seventeenth-century Puritans did not use the contemporary political category "Christian nationalism."
