Cities are often viewed primarily as human environments, but they are also ecosystems inhabited by birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, fungi, and countless other organisms. Research on urban biodiversity increasingly shows that cities do not have to function only as forces of habitat destruction. With deliberate planning and management, urban areas can retain, restore, and create habitat while continuing to serve the needs of people.

A wildlife-friendly city goes beyond simply maintaining a collection of parks. It treats buildings, streets, gardens, waterways, vacant lots, rooftops, transportation corridors, schoolyards, cemeteries, wetlands, urban forests, and other pieces of the city as parts of a larger ecological system. The goal is not to eliminate the distinction between cities and wild landscapes, but to make urban development more permeable and survivable for other species.

Research across many cities suggests that successful urban biodiversity conservation depends on several principles: protecting existing habitat, connecting fragmented habitat, designing new development with wildlife needs in mind, reducing avoidable hazards, creating diverse vegetation and water resources, monitoring ecological outcomes, and building cooperation among governments, scientists, residents, developers, and land managers.

=== What Makes a City Wildlife-Friendly? ===

Wildlife-inclusive planning begins with the idea that habitat requirements should be considered during ordinary urban development rather than addressed only after construction is complete. International initiatives are also encouraging cities to measure their progress. Biodiversity indexes and ecological indicators can track native species, habitat connectivity, ecosystem services, environmental pressures, governance, conservation efforts, and other measures.

Monitoring is essential because installing green infrastructure does not guarantee ecological success. Wildlife-friendly policies are most effective when cities measure outcomes and adapt management according to evidence.

=== Residential Gardens and Citizen Conservation ===

Private land represents a large portion of many cities, making residents important participants in urban biodiversity conservation.

Wildlife-friendly gardening can include planting diverse vegetation, increasing native plants, reducing pesticides, providing water, retaining shelter, creating nesting opportunities, reducing excessive mowing, allowing some areas to remain less manicured, and connecting gardens with surrounding habitat.

Citizen participation extends beyond gardening. This decentralized approach is important because no municipal parks department controls enough land to create a wildlife-friendly city by itself.

As urbanization continues around the world, the question is increasingly not whether wildlife will encounter cities, but what kind of cities wildlife will encounter. Wildlife-friendly planning offers a framework for making those cities safer, more connected, more biologically diverse, and more capable of supporting both human and non-human communities.
