			===Origins of the Black Press===

			The history of Black newspapers begins with the struggle for self-representation. In the United States, African Americans created newspapers because mainstream white newspapers often ignored Black communities, distorted Black life, or defended slavery and racial hierarchy. Early Black editors used print to answer racism directly, build political networks, circulate news, and create a public voice for free and enslaved Black people.

			Freedom’s Journal, founded in New York in 1827, is widely recognized as the first African American newspaper. Its famous purpose was to allow Black people to speak for themselves at a time when hostile newspapers frequently spoke about them without justice or accuracy. Sengstacke, William Monroe Trotter, Charlotta Bass, John Mitchell Jr., P. B. Young Sr., Chester A. Franklin, William O.
