			Modern environmental protection in the United States developed through a network of federal laws, agencies, executive orders, and regulatory programs. The National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, became one of the central laws of this system by requiring federal agencies to consider environmental impacts before taking major actions. NEPA also helped make environmental impact statements, public participation, and interagency review important parts of federal decision-making.

			The Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1970 to consolidate federal pollution-control responsibilities that had previously been spread across several agencies.
