			Populism in the United States developed in the late nineteenth century as farmers, labor reformers, and anti-monopoly activists challenged the growing power of railroads, banks, corporations, and political machines. The movement became nationally organized through the People’s Party, also known as the Populist Party, which emerged from earlier farmer organizations such as the Grange and the Farmers’ Alliance.

			Populists argued that ordinary producers—especially farmers and workers—were being exploited by concentrated economic power. Their program called for monetary reform, railroad regulation, public control of key infrastructure, direct democracy, and a more active federal government willing to defend citizens against corporate and financial domination.
