IRAs (Inventoried Roadless Areas) on National Forests represent a key mechanism of river protection in the United States. We report that more than 130,000 kms of rivers in IRAs, representing 2.5% of the total river length in the conterminous United States, protect key ecological attributes of freshwater ecosystems. When accounting for dozens of other regulatory frameworks, conservation policies, and management practices that aim to protect rivers and their floodplains [45], IRAs serve as the primary mechanism for protecting more than 100,000 kms of river (1.9% of the total river length).
