The massacre was on. Chivington ordered that cannons be fired into the panicked groups of Indians first; then the troops charged on horseback and on foot. There was nowhere for the native people to hide. | |||
I saw quite a number of infants in arms killed with their mothers. I went over the ground soon after the battle [reported Asbury Bird, a soldier with Company D of the First Colorado Cavalry].
