Exercise and Short-Term Appetite Suppression
Research on exercise and appetite shows that physical activity can temporarily reduce hunger, especially after higher-intensity exercise. Studies on high-intensity interval training, aerobic exercise, and resistance exercise suggest that some workouts may briefly suppress appetite without causing people to immediately eat more afterward.
This effect is sometimes called exercise-induced appetite suppression. It appears to be linked to changes in hunger and satiety signals, including ghrelin, peptide YY, GLP-1, lactate, body temperature, and other circulating factors. However, the effect is usually short-term and can vary by person, exercise type, intensity, duration, and health status.
Appetite Hormones and Exercise Intensity
Several studies focus on hormones involved in hunger and fullness. Ghrelin is often described as a hunger-related hormone, while PYY and GLP-1 are commonly linked with satiety. Acute exercise may reduce acylated ghrelin and increase satiety-related hormones such as PYY and GLP-1.
High-intensity exercise may have stronger appetite-suppressing effects than lower-intensity activity in some studies. Lactate accumulation after intense exercise has been repeatedly examined as one possible mechanism connecting hard workouts with reduced hunger. Still, not every study finds the same response, and hormone changes do not always match how hungry a person feels.
Food Intake, Energy Balance, and Compensation
A major theme in the research is whether people compensate for exercise by eating more. Many studies suggest that acute exercise often increases energy expenditure without causing a matching increase in food intake later the same day. This means exercise may create a short-term energy deficit.
However, appetite regulation is complex. Some people may eat more after exercise, while others do not. Food reward, meal timing, meal size, sleep, sedentary time, environmental temperature, and individual differences can all influence post-exercise eating behavior.
HIIT, Resistance Training, and Aerobic Exercise
Different forms of exercise may influence appetite in different ways. High-intensity interval training is often studied because it can produce strong metabolic and hormonal responses in a short period of time. Some evidence suggests HIIT can reduce hunger temporarily and affect hormones such as ghrelin, PYY, GLP-1, insulin, and leptin.
Resistance exercise has also been studied for its effects on appetite, food intake, ghrelin, PYY, lactate, glucose, and training volume. Some studies compare training to failure with nonfailure training, while others compare resistance exercise with aerobic exercise or sedentary control periods.
Aerobic exercise, including walking, running, cycling, and continuous moderate exercise, can also alter appetite sensations and satiety hormones. In many cases, aerobic exercise does not lead to immediate overeating, even when perceived appetite changes.
Age, Sex, Weight Status, and Health Conditions
Exercise-appetite responses can differ across populations. Studies in children and adolescents often find that exercise does not strongly increase appetite or food intake, even when energy expenditure rises. Research in adolescents with obesity explores how exercise may affect appetite, food reward, and energy balance.
Older adults are another important group because low appetite, reduced food intake, and loss of muscle mass can affect health. Some studies examine whether physical activity helps older adults maintain appetite, energy intake, and muscle-supporting nutrition.
People with overweight, obesity, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or weight-loss history may also respond differently. Some reviews suggest exercise may improve appetite control over time, especially when combined with diet and weight-management strategies.
Environmental and Lifestyle Factors
Appetite responses to exercise may be influenced by environmental and lifestyle conditions. Research has explored exercise in heat, cold, altitude, and simulated night-shift conditions. These settings may alter hunger, hormones, hydration, food reward, and later intake.
Meal timing also matters. Exercising before or after meals, delaying meals after exercise, eating breakfast, and changing sedentary time into activity or sleep can all affect appetite regulation. These findings show that appetite is shaped by a combination of exercise, diet, sleep, environment, and daily routine.

The overall evidence suggests that exercise does not simply make people hungrier or cause automatic overeating. Many forms of physical activity can temporarily suppress appetite, improve short-term energy balance, or influence hormones related to hunger and fullness.
The strongest effects often appear after higher-intensity exercise, but responses vary widely.
