Simple Recipes

Swahili Chai

Ingredients

  • 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons Swahili Spice Haven Chai Blend
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Sugar, honey, or sweetener to taste

Traditional Method

  1. Simmer 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of Chai Blend in 1 cup of water for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Add 1/2 cup milk and sweetener to taste.
  3. Simmer for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Strain and serve hot.

East African Pilau Rice

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons Swahili Spice Haven Pilau Masala
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 3 cups water or broth
  • Salt to taste

Traditional Method

  1. Sauté onion in oil until golden.
  2. Add Pilau Masala and stir for 15 to 30 seconds.
  3. Add rice, water or broth, and salt.
  4. Cover and cook on low for about 15 minutes.
  5. Turn off heat and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Chicken Masala

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken pieces
  • 1 tablespoon Swahili Spice Haven Chicken Masala
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: coconut milk or yogurt

Traditional Method

  1. Season chicken with Chicken Masala and salt.
  2. Sauté onion in oil until soft.
  3. Add chicken and brown lightly.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook until softened.
  5. Add a little water, coconut milk, or yogurt if desired.
  6. Simmer until chicken is fully cooked and tender.

Fish Masala

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fish fillets
  • 1 tablespoon Swahili Spice Haven Fish Masala
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: onion, tomato, or coconut milk

Traditional Method

  1. Mix Fish Masala with oil, lemon juice, and salt.
  2. Rub onto fish and marinate for 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Grill, bake, or pan-sear until cooked through.
  4. For a saucy version, simmer onion, tomato, and coconut milk, then add the seasoned fish.

Beef Masala

Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef pieces
  • 1 tablespoon Swahili Spice Haven Beef Masala
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water or broth as needed

Traditional Method

  1. Season beef with Beef Masala and salt.
  2. Brown beef in oil.
  3. Add onion and cook until softened.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook down into a sauce.
  5. Add water or broth and simmer until beef is tender.
  6. Serve with rice, chapati, or vegetables.
