Yes. There is a striking connection between “John Henry” and the present debate over AI, but the parallel becomes more interesting if we resist the simple interpretation that John Henry is merely a hero who proves that humans are better than machines.

The traditional ballad tells of John Henry, an extraordinarily powerful steel driver, confronting a steam-powered drill. He accepts the machine's challenge, outperforms it—and dies from the effort. The Library of Congress describes the song as simultaneously celebrating extraordinary human achievement and marking “the passing of ways of life as the industrial age advanced.” Smithsonian similarly describes it as expressing the tension between machine-driven progress and human labor.

That makes John Henry surprisingly relevant to AI.

John Henry didn't really defeat the machine

On the surface, he did. He drilled farther or faster than the steam drill.

But economically, the steam drill won.

That distinction is the heart of the story. The machine didn't have to be better than the best human being on its first day. It only had to become cheap enough, reliable enough, and scalable enough that employing armies of John Henrys no longer made economic sense.

John Henry could win one contest.

He could not win against:

machine + improvement + replication + time.

And that is remarkably close to what is happening with AI.

Imagine an accountant who can reconcile accounts more accurately than an AI system, a paralegal who can summarize a case better than an AI, or a customer-service representative who handles difficult customers better than a chatbot.

Those victories may all be genuine.

But they're John Henry victories.

The relevant question for an employer isn't necessarily:

“Can AI do this better than my best employee?”

It is:

“Can AI do enough of this work, cheaply enough and quickly enough, that I need fewer people doing it?”

That is a much lower threshold.

The modern steam drill is aimed particularly at repetitive cognitive labor

The steam drill automated physical repetition.

AI increasingly automates cognitive repetition.

The parallel looks something like this:

And there is another important similarity: the technology doesn't necessarily eliminate the occupation immediately.

Steam machinery initially worked alongside human beings.

AI does too.

Someone says:

“AI won't replace accountants. Accountants using AI will replace accountants who don't.”

There is probably some truth in that. But historically, that formulation can obscure a second stage.

Suppose ten employees once performed 1,000 repetitive tasks.

AI allows each employee to perform five times as many.

The company doesn't necessarily employ ten vastly more productive employees.

It may eventually employ two.

That's where the John Henry analogy becomes uncomfortable.

John Henry's mistake was accepting the machine's definition of human value

This is perhaps the deepest connection.

John Henry effectively accepts the proposition:

My value as a human being depends upon my ability to drive steel faster than this machine.

Once he accepts that premise, there is no satisfactory outcome.

If the steam drill beats him, he loses.

If he beats the steam drill but destroys himself doing it, he also loses.

The same trap is appearing around AI.

A writer might try to prove:

“I can produce copy faster than AI.”

A programmer:

“I can write this code faster.”

An analyst:

“I can summarize these documents faster.”

An illustrator:

“I can produce twenty concepts in a day.”

But speed and volume are precisely the dimensions upon which machines have enormous structural advantages.

Trying to demonstrate human worth through machine-like productivity may therefore be the modern equivalent of John Henry swinging his hammer harder.

There is an alternative interpretation

John Henry's story doesn't necessarily tell us to resist technology.

It may tell us to ask a different question:

What should machines do so that human beings don't have to?

Steel driving was brutally difficult and dangerous work. There isn't anything inherently noble about forcing people to perform exhausting repetitive labor when machinery can perform it.

Likewise, there is little intrinsic human value in spending three hours copying numbers between spreadsheets, transcribing meetings, searching thousands of documents, writing nearly identical insurance letters, categorizing invoices, or repeatedly answering the same customer question.

If AI eliminates that work, that can be genuine progress.

The problem arises when society makes the same mistake that lurks underneath John Henry:

We confuse eliminating work with eliminating the value of the worker.

Those aren't the same thing.

The question John Henry leaves unanswered

Suppose the steam drill can perform John Henry's job.

What happens to John Henry?

There are two radically different possibilities.

One society says:

Wonderful. The machine can do the backbreaking work. John Henry can now devote his abilities to something requiring judgment, creativity, relationships, craftsmanship, leadership or simply a better quality of life.

Another says:

Wonderful. We no longer need John Henry.

Technologically, those societies may possess exactly the same machine.

Economically and morally, they are completely different.

And that may be the central question raised by AI.

For two centuries, technological progress has frequently been justified by increased productivity. But productivity gains do not determine how their benefits are distributed. That is a social and political decision.

There is also something profoundly human about John Henry's death

The machine doesn't care whether it wins.

John Henry does.

That's one distinction AI doesn't erase.

The steam drill has no family, pride, identity, fear of unemployment, sense of craftsmanship, community standing or conception of dignity. John Henry's occupation isn't merely a sequence of hammer blows. Being a steel-driving man is part of who he understands himself to be.

AI therefore threatens something that conventional productivity statistics don't measure very well: the connection between work and identity.

If someone's occupation disappears, telling that person that society has become 12% more productive doesn't answer the existential question:

What am I for now?

That question sits underneath John Henry.

Perhaps we are telling the John Henry story again

The nineteenth-century version was:

muscle versus machine.

The twentieth-century version became:

factory worker versus automation.

The twenty-first-century version may be:

human cognition versus artificial intelligence.

But the lesson shouldn't be that human beings must prove they can outperform machines.

John Henry already tried that.

He won—and still lost.

The more useful lesson is that human beings shouldn't have to justify their existence by performing tasks that machines can perform more efficiently. The challenge presented by AI isn't ultimately whether a person can beat the machine at writing, calculating, coding, translating, searching or processing information.

It is whether we can construct a society in which the steam drill works for John Henry rather than making John Henry obsolete.

That would turn the old folk tragedy on its head: John Henry puts down the hammer, lets the machine drill the tunnel, and goes home alive.
