What Size Nails Do You Use for Framing?
A framer fastening two-by-fours together to build a wall typically uses a 16-penny nail to fasten the studs to the top and bottom plates. Sometimes studs have to be doubled to make door trimmers or headers. 10d nails are better than 16d nails for this because they won't penetrate all the way through the joined boards. When toenailing, which means to drive nails at an angle to secure a butt joint, 8d nails are best. Interior framing nails have a vinyl coating to make them easier to drive. They are known as vinyl sinkers. When doing exterior framing, framers use galvanized nails, which are rust resistant.

Nail size is more important than you might think when framing interior walls. Nails that are too long or fat are difficult to drive and can split wood, while short or thin nails just don't do the job. The best nails for framing are 3 1/2 inches long. These are called 16-d, or "16-penny," nails.

Whether you're framing or installing interior trim, a power nailer makes your job easier. If you're looking into purchasing a nailer, the angle between the head and the nail magazine is one of the factors to consider. This angle is somewhere between zero and 34 degrees, with angles of zero, 21 degrees and 28 and 33 degrees being most common. The main advantage of a steeper angle is that it allows you to use the tool in tighter places. This is more important when you're doing interior carpentry than when you're framing. Electric and battery-powered wire nailers shoot smaller nails than pneumatic framing nailers, and they are more likely to have a 28-degree magazine angle than a 21-degree one.
