My big problem with gardening involves my bad back.  I need a decent sized raised bed to grow stuff in.  My garden is also a bit like a swamp.  During the winter it's 6" of sloppy clay and during the summer baked hard like brick.
When I made my first raised beds on my allotment I used cheap softwood, stained and nailed.  They rotted in three years and even after the first year the pressure of the soil made the nails fall out.  You live and learn I guess.
So this time round I went for quality and build strength.  My budget I worked out was about £500.  This time I spent time thinking about the project to make them as useable as possible.

I wanted a raised bed planter, but the best location in my yard is not close to a spigot for watering. I live in a hot climate and I wanted to find a way to avoid dragging out a long length of garden hose 3-4 times a week to water my garden. I finally settled on building "wicking" raised garden bed. While I still need to pull out the hose once in a while, the number of times is much less. This bed waters from the bottom up, which has many benefits but here are a few key:

  I  first got this idea from a older couple i know. I just wanted it bigger. I am completely new to gardening, so apologies in advance for any dumb questions  . I'd like to try my hand at creating a raised bed vegetable garden. I think technically I want to create a raised bed planter (a box with a bottom) because where I want to locate my garden is near a septic field from my backyard neighbor. I do not want any chance on contaminating the garden from the septic field. I'd like to grow things like peppers and tomatoes. That said, what depth would be recommended and are there any drainage factors I should take into account? Any advice is welcomed.
