Raised-bed Gardening

Wikipedia

Raised-bed gardening is a form of gardening in which the soil is raised above ground level and usually enclosed in some way. Raised bed structures can be made of wood, rock, concrete or other materials, and can be of any size or shape. The soil is usually enriched with compost.
Vegetables are grown in geometric patterns, much closer together than in conventional row gardening. The spacing is such that when the vegetables are fully grown, their leaves just barely touch each other, creating a microclimate in which weed growth is suppressed and moisture is conserved.

Well, if you want it to last, you either need to use a rot resistant species (cedar, or redwood, for example), treated lumber (not going to argue if this is good or bad, just pointing out that it is a choice), some sort of plastic based product (such as composite landscape border) or you have to prevent the wood from coming in direct contact with the the soil and/or moisture. You can do this with a variety of things - plastic sheeting, paint on treatment products (more durable than "deck stain").

Secondly, appropriate fasteners, designed to be used outdoors, should be used. "deck screws" are popular, as are screws made from stainless steel (although expensive). The drywall screws he used will begin rusting almost immediately...

It can be difficult for people with arthritis to garden, if that is one of their passions. The amount of bending over and kneeling required makes it nearly impossible to garden for any period of time. But by using the raised bed gardening method, a Kentucky man has found a way to still enjoy his hobby despite his arthritis. Bill Orlowski has developed a model for the beds, and says cost varies between $93 and $115 to construct them, depending on the lumber costs at the yard.

Raised Beds

by tim_n AUTODESK Instructables

My big problem with gardening involves my bad back. I need a decent sized raised bed to grow stuff in. My garden is also a bit like a swamp. During the winter it's 6" of sloppy clay and during the summer baked hard like brick. So this time round I went for quality and build strength. My budget I worked out was about £500. This time I spent time thinking about the project to make them as useable as possible.

The project is still carrying on - you can visit my blog on www.waark.com to see where we're at and any other innovations we're developing. When I made my first raised beds on my allotment I used cheap softwood, stained and nailed. They rotted in three years and even after the first year the pressure of the soil made the nails fall out. You live and learn I guess.

Very Easy MODERN RAISED GARDEN PLANTER for your home!

Personally I like to grow stuff that is expensive (relatively) that I use infrequently. Sage, thyme, rosemary, chives. When a recipe calls for these it’s $5 a packet. If I have some space; a hot pepper.

Secondly and for similar reasons I grow tomatoes. This isn’t the right planter for those. What I don’t plant? Onions, potatoes, carrots. They take 1/2 year to grow and they aren’t very expensive and they are easy to have on-hand in the kitchen. Lettuce: always dies on me, not that interesting anyway. Strawberries: pretty easy to buy when in season and they are good. Strawberry plant is a drooping PITA.

You will save money because you will only need to fill the top 12 to 18 inches with quality soil and the rest will be filler. On top of your logs and sticks layer you can add native soil, compost, or old potting mix like I did. So never throw your old potting mix away, reuse your potting mix to fill the bottom of your raised bed garden.

How can I cheaply turn this box into a raised planter bed to grow household herbs in?

by reddit

Hi everyone, appreciate any thoughts you could provide.

Here's what I'm hoping to accomplish: I'd like to use the box to grow herbs like basil and thyme. I'd like to build or buy something that can hold this box up off of the ground. Some context: The box measures about 5 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and maybe a foot tall We have two doggies in the backyard who we let roam during the day. The planter box would not be fenced off from the pups or anything, which is why I'm hoping to have it be raised up a few feet off the ground. I don't think the dogs would try to knock the set-up over, but if I can make it resistant to that (and the hard winds we sometimes get from Arizona storms), that'd be great. I'm hoping to find a solution that is as inexpensive as possible.

Durable Raised Garden Beds

by Owen Geiger in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Most gardeners are familiar with Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening system. It’s one of the most popular gardening systems in the world. He’s sold over 1 million books (more than any other gardening book). With this method you can grow fives times more plants in a given space with less maintenance. You’ll use less water, fewer seeds, and have healthier plants and fewer insect problems. He says it takes half the labor of typical gardening. You don’t even have to dig down in the soil, because the beds are raised above ground. This means you can grow plants almost anywhere, including areas where the soil is really bad. Instead of trying to fertilize and amend lousy soil over a period of years, you use perfect soil right from the start. Be sure to check out his Square Foot Gardening website for full details. In short, it’s a fantastic system and works great.
An Improved Raised Bed Garden

by Creativeman in Living AUTODESK Instructables

I have been using raised beds for several years now. I converted an existing patch of grass into four, 4ft x 12ft raised beds for a total garden area of 192 sq. ft. This could, conceivably, produce enough food throughout the year to make a serious dent in the food budget. And, of course, all the advantages of raised-bed gardening are realized. However, I have had to replace several end boards due to rotting out at the corners. In order to prevent this from happening, I came up with a way to use concrete as a corner brace, and thereby stop the rotting and make a more permanent installation. Starting in step 7, I show how to replace an end board that has rotted out at the corners.

Build a Raised Bed Garden From Tires

This project has been in existence since about 2006, and merely began as a clean-up project on my friend's farm. The Hildred farm has been running for about 70 years, and has had numerous vehicles come and go, though the tires have stayed around. When they inquired about disposing of them, the cost at that time to dispose of a tire was $3 PER POUND! As anyone who has flipped a tire knows, the disposal of a single tire could break the bank at that price. Something had to be done, and thus from necessity was born the Tire Garden! We've developed these mostly through trial and error, and though we've sold a few we want to teach you how to build them if you want to.

There are several factors that are important for success with raised beds: soil, watering, plants, and pest control.

Raised Beds

by tim_n in Living AUTODESK Instructables

My big problem with gardening involves my bad back. I need a decent sized raised bed to grow stuff in. My garden is also a bit like a swamp. During the winter it's 6" of sloppy clay and during the summer baked hard like brick.

When I made my first raised beds on my allotment I used cheap softwood, stained and nailed. They rotted in three years and even after the first year the pressure of the soil made the nails fall out. You live and learn I guess. So this time round I went for quality and build strength. My budget I worked out was about £500. This time I spent time thinking about the project to make them as useable as possible.

Raised Bed Wicking Garden

by FL_CDH in Living AUTODESK Instructables

I wanted a raised bed planter, but the best location in my yard is not close to a spigot for watering. I live in a hot climate and I wanted to find a way to avoid dragging out a long length of garden hose 3-4 times a week to water my garden. I finally settled on building "wicking" raised garden bed. While I still need to pull out the hose once in a while, the number of times is much less. This bed waters from the bottom up, which has many benefits but here are a few key:

- Less evaporation during watering - Plants are encouraged to grow deeper roots - Lower water usage because garden draws up water only when needed

Should You Cover Raised Garden Beds All Winter? What Gardeners Recommend for Better Blooms

by Barbara Gillette 14/11/25 the spruce

When to cover raised beds depends primarily on your winter climate. You always have the option of cleaning out summer debris and leaving beds empty until next season. In USDA hardiness zones 3 to 10 it's also possible and an efficient use of your space to grow fall and winter crops or sow perennial seed that needs cold stratification.

Leaving beds fallow is practical in zones 3 and lower, where winter crops need the greater protection of high tunnels and heated greenhouses. You may want to choose this option if you garden in a climate with harsh winter weather, regardless of your growing zone.

Beginner's Raised Garden Bed

Hi Fellow Gardeners,

I retired and purchased a home. Now that I had more time on my hands, I wanted a garden. Am I a seasoned gardener? No. Am I a contractor? No. But I wanted a raised garden bed to grow some vegetables. I already had some of the supplies that I moved from my previous residence. Why a raised bed you ask? Easier on my back; I can sit on wall and reach. More control of what goes into the soil mix. Better protection from animals. I planned to add a top to the bed later, but even without one, it will keep some animals out of it due to the height and chicken wire underneath.

How to Make a Raised Bed Garden

by coolbeansbaby68 in Living AUTODESK Instructables

I first got this idea from a older couple i know. I just wanted it bigger. My ground has a lot of clay in it so i built up my first garden about 10 inches off the ground. My parents are getting older so i thought i would make them a smaller one so they wouldn't have to bend over a lot . It sure is nice for weeding not having to bend over. Also you don't have to worry about getting a lot of rain at once because it will drain out the bottom rather than flooding your plants.

I’ve Been Gardening My Whole Life—This Raised Garden Bed Changed Everything And Is Under $150

by Jeremy Laukkonen 20/1/26 the spruce

My grandpa hooked me on gardening early; some of my oldest memories are planting peas and digging potatoes in his huge garden. When I lived in Seattle, I turned my entire yard into a food factory—building raised garden beds from scratch and planting tomatoes, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and zucchini (so, so much zucchini), along with other summer and winter squashes.

The soil in my yard here in Florida is mostly sand, though, and prone to seawater inundation, so I turned to the Keter Splendor Raised Garden Bed to continue my gardening adventures after a cross-country move. The difference between the Keter Splendor and the garden beds I made myself is night and day, both in terms of how much effort it took to put them together and how easy they are to maintain.

The Complete Guide to Raised Beds

by Nicole Burke 4/4/25 GARDENARY

As the cost of lumber continues to increase, I get more and more questions about whether raised beds are necessary for a healthy and productive kitchen garden. The extra expense—for the bed materials and then all that soil to fill each one—of a raised bed versus in-ground gardens might seem like, well... a waste.

I get it. But after trying (unsuccessfully) to garden in the ground, I converted to growing most of my edible plants in raised beds and using raised beds in all of my kitchen garden designs for clients.

=====Building a Durable and Affordable Raised Garden Bed: Seeking Suggestions by reddit]

I’m planning to start growing vegetables in my backyard this year, something I’ve wanted to do for the past two years, but Houston’s unpredictable weather has been holding me back. But hey, it’s never too late! I’ve been researching options for building a raised garden bed. Cedar is quite expensive, and while Pressure Treated Wood is still reasonably priced, I’m also considering galvanized metal beds. They’re on the pricier side, and I’m not sure about their flexibility for adding partitions or planks. So, I’m looking for suggestions on raised garden beds that are affordable and durable enough to last at least 15-20 years. I’m comfortable with basic lumber work and using tools like a miter saw, but I’m not interested in using a table saw. I can buy any plans of Etsy for wood working if needed, but pls give me suggestions. Any thoughts?

Rustic Raised Beds

I created a vegetable plot at the rear of my property in an area that previously had been an alleyway between the two rows of houses. The city sold this off to the residents, who fenced it off and incorporated it into their rear gardens. The ground was just compacted dirt and stone, so the easiest option was to create raised beds and use it as a vegetable plot. That is one benefit of raised beds: the ability to plant in an area of extremely poor soil. Raised beds also provide better drainage and, if you create them in a sensible size, you can reach into the middle of the bed without having to stand on the soil and compress it.

Characterized by smaller individual planters, raised garden beds are much easier to maintain than an in-ground garden, thanks to their approachable size and functionality. You won't need to do any heavy lifting in your yard to prep the area, like tilling your soil or investing in pricey landscaping. Instead, you can buy quality soil in bulk and customize your raised garden beds to whatever configuration you need, whether that's adjusting the location for additional sunlight or raising the height of the bed so you're not straining your back or knees. "Taller raised beds are easier to tend to, which can be especially important for aging gardeners or those with limited mobility," says Jonathan Paetzel, a landscape designer with Marshall Paetzel Landscape Architecture.
Raised Bed Vegetable Garden Layouts for Beginners

At their simplest, raised beds are soil mounds created directly on the ground, but they are often framed with wood, bricks, or other materials for a neat finish. Raised beds are usually filled with a mixture of high-quality potting soil, compost, and/or leaf mold. They drain well and are excellent for otherwise difficult areas such as stony, compacted, contaminated, very wet, or nutrient-poor soils. They can even be used on hard surfaces. By attaching hoops to the edges of the beds, netting or shade cloth can easily be added for added crop protection.
Raised Bed Gardening

by Shelley Mitchell 2/17 EXTENSION

The idea of growing plants in single file or “row crops,” started with the use of a horse and plow to cultivate crops on a large scale. The straight rows, far enough apart to drive a horse between, made plowing easier. Wider spaces later accommodated tractors and their implements. Not knowing the reasons behind growing crops in rows, many home gardeners plant single row vegetable gardens. However, foot traffic on each side of a single row can severely compact soil by the end of a growing season. The excessive row spacing also wastes garden space that can be planted with crops.

Raised bed gardens can range from a simple rectangular plateau of soil to a more elaborate bed framed in wood, stone and mortar, straw bales or modern snap-together plastic blocks. Although more expensive and time consuming to build, permanent structures will keep soil in place during heavy rains and will look nicer in the landscape. However, for a large garden, several beds of mounded soil are very adequate to achieve desired results. Just make sure plenty of mulch is used on the soil to hold it in place during drenching rains.

raised bed planter for vegetable garden

I am completely new to gardening, so apologies in advance for any dumb questions . I'd like to try my hand at creating a raised bed vegetable garden. I think technically I want to create a raised bed planter (a box with a bottom) because where I want to locate my garden is near a septic field from my backyard neighbor. I do not want any chance on contaminating the garden from the septic field. I'd like to grow things like peppers and tomatoes. That said, what depth would be recommended and are there any drainage factors I should take into account? Any advice is welcomed.
How To Create A Raised Garden Bed for Growing Veggies

by gardening, vegetable garden 2 Dads WITH Baggage

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with growing my own vegetables at home. Living with my parents back in the day, we had lots of land, good earth and plenty of sunshine. Our vegetable garden was huge and prolific. Since then I’ve tried to make it happen in smaller spaces and less hardy yards, so I’ve learned how to create a raised garden bed for growing veggies.

We’ve enjoyed vegetables from our raised garden bed for several years, but in the last couple of years things really went downhill. Come to find out, I had depleted the soil of all nutrients with my vegetable plants. The leaves would wither, turn yellow, look stunted and more. The plants would seem sickly and small, despite my fertilizing attempts. The yield of tomatoes and other vegetables was weak.
