The History of Art
The history of art focuses on objects made by humans for any number of spiritual, narrative, philosophical, symbolic, conceptual, documentary, decorative, and even functional and other purposes, but with a primary emphasis on its aesthetic visual form. Visual art can be classified in diverse ways, such as separating fine arts from applied arts; inclusively focusing on human creativity; or focusing on different media such as architecture, sculpture, painting, film, photography, and graphic arts. In recent years, technological advances have led to video art, computer art, performance art, animation, television, and videogames.
What is art history and where is it going?
by Dr. Robert Glass smarthistory
Art history might seem like a relatively straightforward concept: “art” and “history” are subjects most of us first studied in elementary school. In practice, however, the idea of “the history of art” raises complex questions. What exactly do we mean by art, and what kind of history (or histories) should we explore? Let’s consider each term further.

Art historical research has two primary concerns. The first is (1) to discover who made a particular art object (attribution), (2) to authenticate an art object, determining whether it was indeed made by the artist to whom it is traditionally attributed, (3) to determine at what stage in a culture’s development or in an artist’s career the object in question was made, (4) to assay the influence of one artist on succeeding ones in the historical past, and (5) to gather biographical data on artists and documentation (provenance) on the previous whereabouts and ownership of particular works of art.

Why is Art History Important? 12 Key Lessons
by LINEWOOD UNIVERSITY 8/12/23
Art history is the study of visual art, including paintings, sculptures, architecture, and other artistic forms from various cultures and time periods. However, it’s much more than memorizing the names of famous painters, or famous works – it’s an opportunity to connect with the greater picture of humanity through the evolution of human creativity. As Dr. Hutson puts it, “art history offers us far more than a collection of ‘greatest hits’ or objects of market value; it provides a panoramic view of humanity itself, a timeline textured with the very fibers of human experience.” This perspective highlights why art is important in the context of history as a framework for showcasing the triumphs, struggles, and shared humanity of those who came before us.

A quick guide to art history chronology
As with many areas of human history, it is impossible to delineate the different art periods with precision. Some eras last for a few thousand years while others span less than ten. Art is a continuous process of exploration, where more recent periods grow out of existing ones.

What is art history?
by Dana Arnold 1/24 OXFORD ACADEMIC
In ‘What is art history?’ the term ‘art history’ is discussed and the difference between art appreciation and art history established. The work of art is our primary evidence, and it is our interaction between this evidence and methods of enquiry that forms art history. Art appreciation and criticism are also linked to connoisseurship. How is connoisseurship related to taste? The view of art history as a ‘progression’ is analyzed and challenged.
Creativity is an intrinsic part of being human. While every animal experiences emotions, no other animal has the ability to express how it thinks, feels and sees through the creation of works of art.

The art of earlier civilisations such as ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, even though intriguing and highly developed, was viewed as more primitive than that of Hellenic culture. The Greeks laid the foundations of art as we understand it, or so it was argued. See also the Seven Wonders of the World.

Art History | Overview, Methodology & Facts
Art history is a fascinating discipline focused on the development and uses of visual arts throughout human history.

Your Guide to Visual Art
In both content and execution, this painting shocked the art world and Picasso’s close friends. Although nude women as subjects were not unusual, blatantly portraying prostitutes in aggressively sexual postures was extraordinary. Picasso's studies of tribal art are most evident in the mask-like rendered faces, imagery that suggests their sexuality as being not just aggressive, but primitive.

Art History Guide
The history of art mirrors the history of humankind, and the study of works of art and the lives of artists illuminates much about our shared past.
Art History
The main task of art history is to collect, preserve, classify, appreciate, and mediate historic artworks of all periods. It deals with materialized forms of historical interventions that shape the concepts of time and thereby continuously change the character of the present. Art history is continuously in conflict with modernism and defines it in the same moment. ‘Globalization’ can count on a prehistory that goes back before the age of imperialism, but at the same time the traditional concept of art history as ‘Image history’ (Bildgeschichte) is in danger, caused by the separation between art history and visual studies.
The Evolution of Art through history and time
Art is as ancient as civilization itself, with the oldest Indian art form – the Bhimbetka cave paintings, being around 30,000 years old. Throughout history, art has benefitted early humans by aiding in communication, education, and cooperation. It has also helped us accurately reflect on past society by evoking moments of the bygone eras and traditional Indian art forms through visual stimulus. The question of how art has evolved over time is reflected in our most notable art forms, such as the Indus Valley Art of the 2nd century BC, Chola art of the medieval times, and the Mughal paintings from the 15th to 19th Century, all steeped in a rich layer of cultural heritage that mirrors their times.
The Origin of Art and Its Mission
As far back as the Stone Age, after the tribal groups went hunting, fishing and farming, they described their labour and life on rocks, carving totemic signs that became hieroglyphs, in order to convey the scenes of labour activities to their tribesmen. This is the origin of painting that marked the birth of primitive art. To celebrate the harvest of farming, hunting or fishing, the primitive tribesmen gathered together, cheering and singing, stomping and stamping to show their happiness. This is the prototype of dancing and singing.
