The History of Art
The history of art focuses on objects made by humans for any number of spiritual, narrative, philosophical, symbolic, conceptual, documentary, decorative, and even functional and other purposes, but with a primary emphasis on its aesthetic visual form. Visual art can be classified in diverse ways, such as separating fine arts from applied arts; inclusively focusing on human creativity; or focusing on different media such as architecture, sculpture, painting, film, photography, and graphic arts. In recent years, technological advances have led to video art, computer art, performance art, animation, television, and videogames.

Art historical research has two primary concerns. The first is (1) to discover who made a particular art object (attribution), (2) to authenticate an art object, determining whether it was indeed made by the artist to whom it is traditionally attributed, (3) to determine at what stage in a culture’s development or in an artist’s career the object in question was made, (4) to assay the influence of one artist on succeeding ones in the historical past, and (5) to gather biographical data on artists and documentation (provenance) on the previous whereabouts and ownership of particular works of art.

The main task of art history is to collect, preserve, classify, appreciate, and mediate historic artworks of all periods. It deals with materialized forms of historical interventions that shape the concepts of time and thereby continuously change the character of the present. Art history is continuously in conflict with modernism and defines it in the same moment. ‘Globalization’ can count on a prehistory that goes back before the age of imperialism, but at the same time the traditional concept of art history as ‘Image history’ (Bildgeschichte) is in danger, caused by the separation between art history and visual studies.
The Evolution of Art through history and time
Art is as ancient as civilization itself, with the oldest Indian art form – the Bhimbetka cave paintings, being around 30,000 years old. Throughout history, art has benefitted early humans by aiding in communication, education, and cooperation. It has also helped us accurately reflect on past society by evoking moments of the bygone eras and traditional Indian art forms through visual stimulus. The question of how art has evolved over time is reflected in our most notable art forms, such as the Indus Valley Art of the 2nd century BC, Chola art of the medieval times, and the Mughal paintings from the 15th to 19th Century, all steeped in a rich layer of cultural heritage that mirrors their times.
The Origin of Art and Its Mission
As far back as the Stone Age, after the tribal groups went hunting, fishing and farming, they described their labour and life on rocks, carving totemic signs that became hieroglyphs, in order to convey the scenes of labour activities to their tribesmen. This is the origin of painting that marked the birth of primitive art. To celebrate the harvest of farming, hunting or fishing, the primitive tribesmen gathered together, cheering and singing, stomping and stamping to show their happiness. This is the prototype of dancing and singing.

This article explores the history of art, tracing its development from prehistoric times to the contemporary era.
Fine Art and Art History
Knowledge or study of the visual arts within a historical framework, the nature and breadth of which have been the subject of much discussion. Although earlier accounts of art and of aesthetics had suggested or implied the appropriateness and possibility of tracing patterns of historical development within the visual arts, it was perhaps only in the 19th century that a concerted attempt was made to give art history a philosophical basis. As art history subsequently became increasingly linked to and rooted in academic and educational institutions, it was accompanied by a shift in the status of the art historian, who came to be seen as the exponent of an increasingly sophisticated and specialized professional practice.

Generally, the era of Late Antiquity represented a transition from classical modes of artistic style to a more medieval artistic style. However, the basic philosophy of art, as it were, stayed static. By the year 300 c.e., most Christians had accepted sculptures (which they had originally been suspicious of, because of their use in Pagan worship. With this, of course, came the greek idealistic realism which characterized the Hellenic Aesthetic. The painting is by Nigerian artist Uzo Egonu, as part of a series titled “Stateless People,” made in 1981. Egonu settled in Britain in the 1940s, where he spent most of his career until his death in 1996 in London. As an artist yearning for his homeland, Egonu crafted paintings that spoke to feelings of statelessness and the complexity of migration.

During a survey of three archaeologically unexplored areas in Saudi Arabia’s Nefud Desert — Jebel Arnaan, Jebel Mleiha, and Jebel Misma — researchers found 176 massive petroglyphs carved into sandstone cliffs and boulder facades. Layered in thick, dark rock varnish, the petroglyphs were carved on elevated ledges at heights up to 128 feet.
