Looking for a solution to grow more fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in a small space? The answer is to grow up, not out. In this video I’ll share why you should reconsider using pots and containers if you're growing with little or no land but want to maximize your growing space and garden production. I’ll share the results of what I’ve been able to do with 2 vertical Green Stalk planters that only take up 2 square feet on a balcony or patio. Switching to vertical gardening this past summer was undoubtedly the best decision and has been a solution to a number of walls I was hitting as a small space gardener. Transitioning from a garden that was 100% made from containers, I’ll share why I’ll be moving away from them. So, if you’re on the fence (or just curious) I’ve got 6 ideas for you to consider. | Looking for a solution to grow more fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in a small space? The Complete Guide to Vertical Gardening
by Nicole Burke 11/08/2025 Gardenary
So let's talk about why you want to add trellises to your garden space. When you garden in a raised bed, every inch is prime real estate, and I like to think of a trellis as a high-rise apartment for plants. Instead of letting your cucumbers, beans, or squash sprawl across the ground, a trellis invites them to grow up instead of out. That means you can fit more plants in the same space and enjoy a bigger harvest.

VERTICAL GARDENING TIPS & IDEAS: Why and how to add VERTICAL SPACE to your garden for EVERY BUDGET
by Growing In The Garden 23/10/20 YouTube
I live in UK. Our gardens are small. Still I manage to do flower and vegetable gardening. I love gardening and it is my passion. In 2021 we moved to Essex. It’s a new development. When we moved our garden was nice green blank canvas. I didn’t want to miss the season last year so I planted few shrubs and used my old plastic raised beds to grow vegetables. I had a very good harvest. I couldn’t grow any climbing vegetables because I didn’t have any trellis. I used bamboo sticks to support tomatoes and some other vegetables. Now I am constantly collecting ideas to create a vertical garden. So, I can grow more and more vegetables. As I have a small garden vertical garden is ideal grow everything. As I am a born vegetarian I love vegetables. I am a very good cook too. I cook our traditional food at home. Learned from my mum, grandma and our relatives.

10 More Vertical Gardening Ideas: Growing in the Garden
by Growing In The Garden 1/9/23 YouTube
Great video (as usual), thank you! This is definitely one of my favorite topics. I'm still very new to gardening but I definitely appreciate optimizing space! A setup that has worked well for me is: I bought a 10' 3/8" rebar from Home Depot. I had some bright orange Mason's line from another project. I cut the rebar in half and used banding strap to fix it to the sides of my (wooden) raised bed. I then used the string to set up a Florida Weave trellis. It's working great for my determinate tomatoes! It's super easy and very cheap. Rebar comes up to 20' lengths, so it can be easily customized to whatever height. I really like your setup for the whiskey barrel. I might give a shot to welding something like that this winter. It won't be nearly as pretty though. I have a cattle panel trellis that my Malabar spinach is in the process of smothering.

It is not difficult to make such a structure. You can use a lot of materials that are usually unnecessary in garbage cans. Important! Vertical gardens can transform wall or maximise a small space in your garden. They needn’t be massive with complex watering systems or an eye watering cost. If you keep things simple, they're easy to make yourself at home. Tammy’s here to show you how! Choose a sturdy frame: Wire mesh is a great option or go with a classic wooden lattice. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s sturdy as watered pot plants get quite heavy. Another option is to create one with timber pallets. The shelves have fabulous planting pockets, but it can be hard to know if the timber has been treated. It's wise to avoid pallets for gardens that include edible foods.

Vertical Gardening that Defies the Wind | Spring Garden Tour
A few days ago, we had a pretty massive storm front that traveled through our area. This mean fairly high winds and the potential for flooding and more. Here in zone 5 Wisconsin, we get those types of wind heavy storms a few times each year. There are many things we have to concern ourselves about being destroyed in the garden, but one thing we have never had any concern over is whether or not our GreenStalk vertical gardens would topple over. We have been nothing but pleased with these GreenStalk vertical planters from the beginning, and we know they are stable and dependable. In this gardening video, in addition to talking the GreenStalks, we also talk about some of the other ways we trellis in the garden to prevent wind damage, and finally we give a short garden tour of the spring garden vegetables that are already coming through the cool soil. (These include peas, spinach, and radishes). We hope you enjoy this garden tips video, and please let us know if you have any questions.

The vertical structure also has a number of disadvantages:
-the soil in containers dries up quickly and the beds need frequent watering; -a small amount of soil in containers does not allow you to sow all the usual plants for the garden, and already planted ones require regular fertilizing; if the site is located in the climatic zone where severe winters are observed, it is not recommended to plant perennial crops – in winter the soil will freeze and the plants will die.

Garden Girl TV: Vertical Gardening One(How to Grow Vertically)

Here, as you can see, my pumpkin plants are thriving. Pumpkin plants are also vining crops. Now, in the country, where you have a lot of space, you can just let this grow along the ground, but here in a city environment, we do not have all that space.
So, what I have done here is, I put together a dog kennel. This is actually really nifty. It is exactly 4 x 4 so it fits perfectly in your raise beds. And, these vines just slough on themselves eventually. You do not have to continuously train them. Okay, so you can go vining crops on vertical supports, but there are other types of plants that also need support like my heirloom tomatoes here, this are Tiffin Mennonite tomatoes, and it grows to be a huge plant.
