The Complete Guide to Vertical Gardening
by Nicole Burke 11/08/2025 Gardenary
So let's talk about why you want to add trellises to your garden space. When you garden in a raised bed, every inch is prime real estate, and I like to think of a trellis as a high-rise apartment for plants. Instead of letting your cucumbers, beans, or squash sprawl across the ground, a trellis invites them to grow up instead of out. That means you can fit more plants in the same space and enjoy a bigger harvest.

VERTICAL GARDENING TIPS & IDEAS: Why and how to add VERTICAL SPACE to your garden for EVERY BUDGET
by Growing In The Garden 23/10/20 YouTube
I live in UK. Our gardens are small. Still I manage to do flower and vegetable gardening. I love gardening and it is my passion. In 2021 we moved to Essex. It’s a new development. When we moved our garden was nice green blank canvas. I didn’t want to miss the season last year so I planted few shrubs and used my old plastic raised beds to grow vegetables. I had a very good harvest. I couldn’t grow any climbing vegetables because I didn’t have any trellis. I used bamboo sticks to support tomatoes and some other vegetables. Now I am constantly collecting ideas to create a vertical garden. So, I can grow more and more vegetables. As I have a small garden vertical garden is ideal grow everything. As I am a born vegetarian I love vegetables. I am a very good cook too. I cook our traditional food at home. Learned from my mum, grandma and our relatives.

10 More Vertical Gardening Ideas: Growing in the Garden
by Growing In The Garden 1/9/23 YouTube
Great video (as usual), thank you! This is definitely one of my favorite topics. I'm still very new to gardening but I definitely appreciate optimizing space! A setup that has worked well for me is: I bought a 10' 3/8" rebar from Home Depot. I had some bright orange Mason's line from another project. I cut the rebar in half and used banding strap to fix it to the sides of my (wooden) raised bed. I then used the string to set up a Florida Weave trellis. It's working great for my determinate tomatoes! It's super easy and very cheap. Rebar comes up to 20' lengths, so it can be easily customized to whatever height. I really like your setup for the whiskey barrel. I might give a shot to welding something like that this winter. It won't be nearly as pretty though. I have a cattle panel trellis that my Malabar spinach is in the process of smothering.

Vertical gardens can transform wall or maximise a small space in your garden. They needn’t be massive with complex watering systems or an eye watering cost. If you keep things simple, they're easy to make yourself at home. Tammy’s here to show you how! Choose a sturdy frame: Wire mesh is a great option or go with a classic wooden lattice. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s sturdy as watered pot plants get quite heavy. Another option is to create one with timber pallets. The shelves have fabulous planting pockets, but it can be hard to know if the timber has been treated. It's wise to avoid pallets for gardens that include edible foods.

Vertical Gardening that Defies the Wind | Spring Garden Tour
A few days ago, we had a pretty massive storm front that traveled through our area. This mean fairly high winds and the potential for flooding and more. Here in zone 5 Wisconsin, we get those types of wind heavy storms a few times each year. There are many things we have to concern ourselves about being destroyed in the garden, but one thing we have never had any concern over is whether or not our GreenStalk vertical gardens would topple over. We have been nothing but pleased with these GreenStalk vertical planters from the beginning, and we know they are stable and dependable. In this gardening video, in addition to talking the GreenStalks, we also talk about some of the other ways we trellis in the garden to prevent wind damage, and finally we give a short garden tour of the spring garden vegetables that are already coming through the cool soil. (These include peas, spinach, and radishes). We hope you enjoy this garden tips video, and please let us know if you have any questions.

The vertical structure also has a number of disadvantages:
-the soil in containers dries up quickly and the beds need frequent watering; -a small amount of soil in containers does not allow you to sow all the usual plants for the garden, and already planted ones require regular fertilizing; if the site is located in the climatic zone where severe winters are observed, it is not recommended to plant perennial crops – in winter the soil will freeze and the plants will die.

Here, as you can see, my pumpkin plants are thriving. Pumpkin plants are also vining crops. Now, in the country, where you have a lot of space, you can just let this grow along the ground, but here in a city environment, we do not have all that space.
So, what I have done here is, I put together a dog kennel. This is actually really nifty. It is exactly 4 x 4 so it fits perfectly in your raise beds. And, these vines just slough on themselves eventually. You do not have to continuously train them. Okay, so you can go vining crops on vertical supports, but there are other types of plants that also need support like my heirloom tomatoes here, this are Tiffin Mennonite tomatoes, and it grows to be a huge plant.

The first hurdle to overcome is how to make the Vert Garden look less like a clothes line and more like a fashionable planter. This can be accomplished by cutting a little bit here and there to maintain the material and to lose the clothing shape.
Cut the pants into the desired shape. Pants are fun because you can do a lot with them to make unique planters. Because the pair I am using for this demonstration has a hole in the knee, I am going to use the bottom half of the pant as one planter and sew off the top to make a second.

I’ve seen vertical gardens in public places and they’re always pretty impressive. But mostly they’re done with many containers on a framework. I got the idea of a compact, picture frame type planter. But you can’t just turn a box of dirt up on end. It’ll all schlump to the bottom. Also, there are the problems of how to water the plants and where does the run-off go. So here’s what I came up with.

Vertical Gardening Using Trellises, Stakes, and Cages
by Virginia Cooperative Extension
Plants that produce long sprawling vines perform well when trained to vertical support structures. Pole beans, peas, cucumbers, melons, and tomatoes are excellent candidates. Trellises, stakes, and cages allow for climbing plants that would normally take over a garden to be grown and contained in a smaller area, allowing for more space to be used for other crops. It doesn’t have to be expensive; various repurposed materials can be used to build these simple structures (Figure 1). Vertical gardening provides many other benefits beyond maximizing the use of available space. Vertically-trained plants can be easier to harvest from and bear cleaner, higher- quality fruit. Additionally, training plants upright can facilitate better air movement through the foliage, which reduces disease pressure.

DIY Vertical Gardens – Are they all safe?

Pallets are already heavy and once you add soil, plants and water, they weigh a ton! If you are going to plant directly into the pallet and mounting this to a wall, make sure it’s strong and secure. Leaning these against a wall is no problem unless your on a balcony with weight restrictions.
You can of course use the pallet as a vertical garden plant stand or ladder for container plants which they work great for… in a junkin’ garden kinda way. Fern from Life on the Balcony did a great job planting hers up with ornamental plants and Kelly show’s how you can combine a pallet with pots. How to create a vertical garden
Gardeners have long been creating ‘green walls’ using wires or trellises to provide a framework for climbing plants. Climbing plants like clematis, honeysuckle, rose and jasmine can create an amazing scent for your garden and are loved by many creatures from butterflies to bees.
But ‘vertical garden’ can also mean plants living in pots fixed to the wall, hanging baskets, or on ladders or steps, giving depth to patios, driveways and small spaces.
Grow more in less space with vertical gardening
Vertical gardens often are referred to as green walls, but they differ from green facades such as ivy walls. When considering a support surface for a vertical garden, think about what you want to grow, whether it be flowers, vegetables or a combination of both. Obvious choices include fences, trellises, pergolas, posts, poles with strings or nets, trees or cages.
When thinking about other ways to incorporate vertical gardening into your space, just let your imagination run wild. Possible frame options include old ladders, bicycles, old wagon wheels, wooden pallets or containers attached to an existing fence. An inexpensive plastic shoe storage system hung on the fence or wall with the pockets full of soil is a great way to vertically grow herbs.

Cheer up a bare wall by planting succulents and sedums in the gaps. Plants that thrive in hot, dry conditions will thrive in crevices between bricks. Houseleeks, rock cress, sempervivums and ferns will all cope in these conditions. Push the roots of your plug plants or seedlings into the walls and fill in around them with soil. Water every so often until the plants begin to put on new growth.

Nowhere to Go, But Up – Vertical Gardening
by Lynn Lampman, Tyler Volunteer 13/6/22 Tyler Arboretum
A fence, trellis, pergolas, posts, poles with strings or nets, and cages can serve as a great vertical space for beans, peas, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and more. For example, you can use the rungs of a ladder to train vines while placing the vegetable (ex., pumpkins) on its steps for further support. So let your creativity run wild! As a bonus, no matter how you build them, trellis structures can serve double duty as a privacy screen for a patio or small yard. Once the lush vines of your veggie plants grow upwards, they will have your small space feeling like a garden oasis. Unless the neighbors stop by to check out what you’re growing, that is!
