Raised-bed Gardening

Wikipedia

Raised-bed gardening is a form of gardening in which the soil is raised above ground level and usually enclosed in some way. Raised bed structures can be made of wood, rock, concrete or other materials, and can be of any size or shape. The soil is usually enriched with compost.
Vegetables are grown in geometric patterns, much closer together than in conventional row gardening. The spacing is such that when the vegetables are fully grown, their leaves just barely touch each other, creating a microclimate in which weed growth is suppressed and moisture is conserved.

Well, if you want it to last, you either need to use a rot resistant species (cedar, or redwood, for example), treated lumber (not going to argue if this is good or bad, just pointing out that it is a choice), some sort of plastic based product (such as composite landscape border) or you have to prevent the wood from coming in direct contact with the the soil and/or moisture. You can do this with a variety of things - plastic sheeting, paint on treatment products (more durable than "deck stain").

Secondly, appropriate fasteners, designed to be used outdoors, should be used. "deck screws" are popular, as are screws made from stainless steel (although expensive). The drywall screws he used will begin rusting almost immediately...

It can be difficult for people with arthritis to garden, if that is one of their passions. The amount of bending over and kneeling required makes it nearly impossible to garden for any period of time. But by using the raised bed gardening method, a Kentucky man has found a way to still enjoy his hobby despite his arthritis. Bill Orlowski has developed a model for the beds, and says cost varies between $93 and $115 to construct them, depending on the lumber costs at the yard.

You can make them taller if you choose. I made them so the dirt is at knuckle level when standing because I also don't want to have to reach too high to harvest vegetables (pepper plants get pretty huge here in Mississippi). It's a good compromise.
Raised Beds

by tim_n AUTODESK Instructables

My big problem with gardening involves my bad back. I need a decent sized raised bed to grow stuff in. My garden is also a bit like a swamp. During the winter it's 6" of sloppy clay and during the summer baked hard like brick. So this time round I went for quality and build strength. My budget I worked out was about £500. This time I spent time thinking about the project to make them as useable as possible.

The project is still carrying on - you can visit my blog on www.waark.com to see where we're at and any other innovations we're developing. When I made my first raised beds on my allotment I used cheap softwood, stained and nailed. They rotted in three years and even after the first year the pressure of the soil made the nails fall out. You live and learn I guess.

Very Easy MODERN RAISED GARDEN PLANTER for your home!

by reddit

Personally I like to grow stuff that is expensive (relatively) that I use infrequently. Sage, thyme, rosemary, chives. When a recipe calls for these it’s $5 a packet. If I have some space; a hot pepper.

Secondly and for similar reasons I grow tomatoes. This isn’t the right planter for those. What I don’t plant? Onions, potatoes, carrots. They take 1/2 year to grow and they aren’t very expensive and they are easy to have on-hand in the kitchen. Lettuce: always dies on me, not that interesting anyway. Strawberries: pretty easy to buy when in season and they are good. Strawberry plant is a drooping PITA.
