Container Gardening
Container Garden
Container Gardening by Wikipedia
Container gardening or pot gardening/farming is the practice of growing plants, including edible plants, exclusively in containers instead of planting them in the ground.[1] A container in gardening is a small, enclosed and usually portable object used for displaying live flowers or plants. It may take the form of a pot, box, tub, basket, tin, barrel or hanging basket.
Vegetable Container Gardening for Beginners
by Mary Marlowe Leverette 10/2/24 the spruce
Tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, cucumbers, cabbage, and beans should be planted in at least a five-gallon container. Beets, carrots, lettuce, and green onions can be planted in three-gallon containers. Most herbs and radishes grow well in containers of one gallon or less.
Vegetables that require support like a tomato or squash plant will need a deeper container to avoid tipping over from imbalance or by offering too much wind resistance. Root vegetables like carrots and potatoes need a deeper container than shallow-rooted leafy greens.

The Secret to Keeping Container Plants Alive All Summer Long, According to Gardeners
by Mallory Carra 15/7/25 the spruce
The summer heat provides challenges for all types of gardens, but especially container plants. Potted shrubs, flowers, and herbs dry out more often because they're supposed to use potting mix, which is made to increase aeration and drainage, but in turn, that can make the soil dry out faster.
"Container plants are like houseplants with a view—they rely entirely on us for everything they need to survive," Tabar Gifford, master gardener and partnership cultivator at American Meadows and High Country Gardens, says. "With limited soil volume and exposure on all sides, pots heat up faster, dry out more quickly, and are more vulnerable to temperature swings."
Kerry Michaels
Kerry Michaels wrote about container gardening for The Spruce from 2008 to 2016. After a move from Manhattan to rural Maine in 2001, she discovered she wasn't that great at landscape gardening, but could grow almost anything in a container.
She has both written about and photographed gardens for professional publications, including "Growing the Northeast Garden," and "A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers," both in 2015. She was Garden Editor for the James Beard Award-winning magazine ChopChop. and was head writer and producer of a CD-Rom, Country Living Style. She has written about gardening for Discovery Channel, Small Gardens, A&E, Weekly Reader, Disney, and Sesame Workshop.
20 Best Large Container Plants
by Marie Iannotti 26/12/25 the spruce
Tall potted plants transform ordinary container gardens into striking visual displays by adding height, variety, and drama. To create a balanced look, use the "thrillers, spillers, and fillers" method—select a tall plant as a focal point pair it with a spiller that softens the container's edges, and complete the arrangement with rounded filler plants to achieve a lush appearance.
Choose plants suitable for a large pot ensuring they match your growing zone if you want them to survive winter. Avoid placing rocks at the bottom of a planter to maintain proper drainage, and consider using objects like plastic bottles or Styrofoam to fill extra depth in containers.
28 of the Best Spiller Plants for Container Gardens
[28 of the Best Spiller Plants for Container Gardens by Marie Iannotti 21/10/25 the spruce]
Spiller plants are those that drape over the sides of pots with a cascading growth habit. In a container garden, these plants add texture and color while complementing taller "thriller" flowers. By combining spillers with trailing plants you soften the edges of your garden and achieve a polished, professional look.
Using thrillers, fillers, and spillers together creates a dynamic display: tall plants in the center, smaller ones in the middle, and spillers cascading down. With the right choices, like those for hanging containers your garden can be both complete and visually striking.
