Container Garden
Container Gardening by Wikipedia
Container gardening or pot gardening/farming is the practice of growing plants, including edible plants, exclusively in containers instead of planting them in the ground.[1] A container in gardening is a small, enclosed and usually portable object used for displaying live flowers or plants. It may take the form of a pot, box, tub, basket, tin, barrel or hanging basket.

Tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, cucumbers, cabbage, and beans should be planted in at least a five-gallon container. Beets, carrots, lettuce, and green onions can be planted in three-gallon containers. Most herbs and radishes grow well in containers of one gallon or less.
Vegetables that require support like a tomato or squash plant will need a deeper container to avoid tipping over from imbalance or by offering too much wind resistance. Root vegetables like carrots and potatoes need a deeper container than shallow-rooted leafy greens.

The Secret to Keeping Container Plants Alive All Summer Long, According to Gardeners
by Mallory Carra 15/7/25 the spruce
The summer heat provides challenges for all types of gardens, but especially container plants. Potted shrubs, flowers, and herbs dry out more often because they're supposed to use potting mix, which is made to increase aeration and drainage, but in turn, that can make the soil dry out faster.
"Container plants are like houseplants with a viewâthey rely entirely on us for everything they need to survive," Tabar Gifford, master gardener and partnership cultivator at American Meadows and High Country Gardens, says. "With limited soil volume and exposure on all sides, pots heat up faster, dry out more quickly, and are more vulnerable to temperature swings."

20 Best Large Container Plants
by Marie Iannotti 26/12/25 the spruce
Tall potted plants transform ordinary container gardens into striking visual displays by adding height, variety, and drama. To create a balanced look, use the "thrillers, spillers, and fillers" methodâselect a tall plant as a focal point pair it with a spiller that softens the container's edges, and complete the arrangement with rounded filler plants to achieve a lush appearance.
Choose plants suitable for a large pot ensuring they match your growing zone if you want them to survive winter. Avoid placing rocks at the bottom of a planter to maintain proper drainage, and consider using objects like plastic bottles or Styrofoam to fill extra depth in containers.

Spiller plants are those that drape over the sides of pots with a cascading growth habit. In a container garden, these plants add texture and color while complementing taller "thriller" flowers. By combining spillers with trailing plants you soften the edges of your garden and achieve a polished, professional look.
Using thrillers, fillers, and spillers together creates a dynamic display: tall plants in the center, smaller ones in the middle, and spillers cascading down. With the right choices, like those for hanging containers your garden can be both complete and visually striking.

Six Great Containers for Growing Vegetables
by Kerry Michaels 15/6/22 the spruce
Growing vegetables in container gardens is an efficient way to produce fresh food if you have a limited space. Or perhaps you might want to soften and beautify a hardscape such as a patio, porch, balcony, or even a driveway with edible vegetables.
The choice of container can have a big impact on how productive your plants are and if they will survive. The primary factor to keep in mind is to make sure your vegetable plant has enough room for a deep root system to develop. If you are growing large plants (like tomatoes), make sure that the pot will be large and heavy enough so it won't tip over in a stiff wind.

Want Better Fall Container Gardens? Experts Say These Fixes Can Make a Big Difference
by Sarah Lyon 23/09/25 the spruce
For starters, a key to successful container gardening is choosing the correct size of container for your plants.
"Too small and your plants could get root-bound and stunted," says gardening expert Jane Dobbs. "On the other hand, too big a container can hold a lot of water, causing root rot." It is important that your container has drain holes, she adds, as proper drainage prevents root rot. Choosing the right material for your container is also important and will affect whether or not your plants thrive.

Adopted by permaculture advocates, it is suggested the technique helps to improve soil fertility, water retention, and soil warming, thus benefiting plants grown on or near such mounds. 10 Tips for Watering Plants Growing in Containers
by Kerry Michaels 26/4/24 the spruce
Whether plants are growing in the ground or in containers, soil requirements for the vast majority of garden plants stipulate "moist but well-drained soil." This means soil that isn't constantly soggy or saturated, able to drain well so that soil is slightly moist. Fortunately, with modern potting mixes that are designed for good drainage, achieving this is easier than it used to be.
We all know that different types of plants can have different requirements for soil moisture. Some plants like to be dry, some like to be a bit dry between waterings, and then some will swoon and drop all their buds and leaves when they are the least bit dry.
10 Great Ornamental Grasses to Grow in Containers
by Marie Iannotti 25/11/25 the spruce
Ornamental grasses can thrive in containers, making them a versatile choice for gardeners who want to prevent these plants from overtaking their gardens. These container-grown grasses are not only easier to divide but also offer a beautiful way to showcase grasses. However, it is important to note that ornamental grasses in pots are generally less hardy by about two USDA hardiness zone compared to when they are planted in the ground. The hardiness of these grasses can vary based on their exposure, the material of the container, and how well you prepare them for winter. Many people treat potted ornamental grasses as annuals, replanting them each year, or overwintering them in sheltered spaces like a greenhouse or garage.

As long as these conditions are right, the plants will thrive and you'll have fresh herbs at your fingertips for a long time.

Container Garden Ideas
Accessorizing a garden is like decorating a home or choosing a new outfit. How a garden is adorned sets the tone and defines a space. To establish order, focal points are commonly used as part of basic garden design. A focal point is the anchor around which the rest of the garden is created. Mindful placement of plants and hardscaping enhances the visual organization of a landscape. A central subject lends continuity throughout the seasons as plants go in and out of bloom. Without something to focus on, the eye wanders, looking for a place to rest.

Container gardens aren't just for those lacking sizeable outdoor space. Containers are great because you can control the environment around your plants, easily move the pots for appropriate sun saturation, coordinate with your outdoor decor, and a myriad of other reasons.

Hi, I know it is a bit early to be talking about next years growing season but I have a few questions about growing veggies in containers. For many years I have always had a large garden, which included tomatoes (regular, roma and cherry)Cukes, a variety of peppers, and cold crops and have always had success. For the past few years we are living in a house that is next to a car radiator shop My husband will not let me plant my normal garden due to the antifreeze (one never knows how much has leaked or seeped into the soil) I really miss the garden. I would like to start preparing for growing in containers and am looking for some advice and places to research what I will need to do ( already found the post on growing tomatoes in a 5 gal bucket.) Thanks for any help and info
Consider Container Gardening
As long as you have some sun and access to water, gardening in containers lets you and your students grow vegetables, herbs, flowers, even fruit trees. A container garden can be as simple as a few pots of herbs in a window box or as elaborate as an array of large, outdoor tubs with plants that rotate seasonally. You can do all your gardening in containers or they can complement an in-ground garden space. Some of the benefits of container gardening include:
One Day DIY Project: Setting Up A Container Garden
âI have to say when I first order 1 trellis to try out from you a few weeks ago I was not overly excited about it while I waited for it to arrive(thinking this was going to a cheap made product), once the box came, I picked up the box, feeling the weight my curiosity started to grow, once I followed the instructions on installing I was blown away at the quality and detail. I decided to go all in and order 3 more...You have done great service for me and my garden!â
Container Gardening
You can enjoy plants around your home even if you don't have a lot of space. Container gardening can be fun and easy.
With simple considerations like plant type, container size and maintenance, you will be able to create a flourishing container garden with ease.
Growing Vegetables in Containers
To get started, find a large container, roughly the size of a 5-gallon bucket. That shape can vary, of course, but thatâs the ideal minimum volume. I would not use anything less than 10-12â deep.
I also plant vegetables in three stock tanks that I purchased years agoâif you go this route, be sure to cut generous holes in the bottom for drainage. My stock tanks are 45â long by 24â wide by 24â tall. I like bigger containers for several reasons, but the main one is that the soil wonât dry out as fast as with smaller ones. Vegetables need very rich soil and plenty of water, and youâll have an easier time keeping up with a larger container.

Container Selection
The container options for your project are nearly endless â just avoid anything that might be toxic, such as plastic that once contained oil or other chemicals. Wood, terracotta, plastic and metal can all be acceptable. Pots, planters and hanging baskets are most common, but watering cans, wheelbarrows, urns and hollowed-out stumps also will work. Wire baskets can be lined with moss or coconut coir to support soil and add visual appeal. One of the most important considerations when choosing a container is to select one with a depth that will allow enough soil volume to accommodate the roots of all the plants when mature. Adequate drainage is essential; holes can be drilled into the bottom of containers, if needed.

Container Garden Guide
The right pot matters, too. Select a container big enough to support your plant or plants as they grow and offer enough space for their roots. Plants that get rootbound in containers dry out a lot faster. They may also suffer from stress, which reduces flowering and makes them look less healthy.
Unless youâre growing aquatic plants, itâs also helpful to select a container that allows excess water to escape the pot. That way your plants donât drown after a heavy rain. When selecting a material for your container garden, thatâs more of a personal preference than a plant preference. There are a couple of considerations. Metal containers heat up more in hot, sunny spots. Terra-cotta containers, because of their porous nature, dry out faster than other types.
