Raised-bed Gardening

Wikipedia

Raised-bed gardening is a form of gardening in which the soil is raised above ground level and usually enclosed in some way. Raised bed structures can be made of wood, rock, concrete or other materials, and can be of any size or shape. The soil is usually enriched with compost.
Vegetables are grown in geometric patterns, much closer together than in conventional row gardening. The spacing is such that when the vegetables are fully grown, their leaves just barely touch each other, creating a microclimate in which weed growth is suppressed and moisture is conserved.

Well, if you want it to last, you either need to use a rot resistant species (cedar, or redwood, for example), treated lumber (not going to argue if this is good or bad, just pointing out that it is a choice), some sort of plastic based product (such as composite landscape border) or you have to prevent the wood from coming in direct contact with the the soil and/or moisture. You can do this with a variety of things - plastic sheeting, paint on treatment products (more durable than "deck stain").

Secondly, appropriate fasteners, designed to be used outdoors, should be used. "deck screws" are popular, as are screws made from stainless steel (although expensive). The drywall screws he used will begin rusting almost immediately...

Raised Bed Gardening

It can be difficult for people with arthritis to garden, if that is one of their passions. The amount of bending over and kneeling required makes it nearly impossible to garden for any period of time. But by using the raised bed gardening method, a Kentucky man has found a way to still enjoy his hobby despite his arthritis. Bill Orlowski has developed a model for the beds, and says cost varies between $93 and $115 to construct them, depending on the lumber costs at the yard.

How to DESIGN a RAISED BED GARDEN: 10 SIMPLE STEPS

by Growing In The Garden 4/2/22 YouTube

Gardening with raised beds has several advantages:
• The soil mix you fill the beds with ensures the best growing conditions for gardening from the beginning, rather than having to deal with existing soil issues such as rocky or compacted soil.
• Drainage issues improve because the growing surface is above the ground level and water drains out easily.
• Raised beds warm-up earlier in the spring, allowing you to get a jump on planting.
