Hydroponics

by Wikipedia

Hydroponics is a type of horticulture and a subset of hydroculture which involves growing plants, usually crops or medicinal plants, without soil, by using water-based mineral nutrient solutions in an artificial environment. Terrestrial or aquatic plants may grow freely with their roots exposed to the nutritious liquid or the roots may be mechanically supported by an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, or other substrates.
Despite inert media, roots can cause changes of the rhizosphere pH and root exudates can affect rhizosphere biology and physiological balance of the nutrient solution when secondary metabolites are produced in plants. Transgenic plants grown hydroponically allow the release of pharmaceutical proteins as part of the root exudate into the hydroponic medium.

Top Three Hydroponic Towers In The USA! 12+ Crops, 64 Days, Tower Garden v ALTO Garden v EXO Tower!

by UrbanAgMike 20/11/24 YouTube

The Tower Garden HOME is a vertical, aeroponic gardening system designed for home use, where up to 32 plants grow in a tower-like structure by receiving nutrient-rich water directly on their roots through a recirculating system, allowing you to cultivate a variety of herbs, vegetables, and small fruits indoors or outdoors with minimal space required.

The ALTO GARDEN GX Hydroponic Tower is a fully automated, contained system for growing plants indoors without soil. A water pump with a timer pumps water to the top of the tower, where gravity brings it back down to water the roots. Because the roots are exposed to more air by growing in mediums like rock wool, plants grow faster and produce harvests more quickly. The EXO Tower is a modular, hydroponic system that can grow up to 28 plants, veggies, leafy greens, herbs, micro greens, and flowers in less than two square feet. No matter if you are brand new to growing your own plants at home, or a seasoned expert, exotower is a perfect choice!

21 Plants Perfect for a Hydroponic Indoor Garden

by Nadia Hassani 12/26/25 the spruce

Hydroponic gardening allows you to grow a wide variety of plants in a water-based system that doesn't require soil. While most types of plants can thrive in this environment, those that require extensive space or have deep roots, like trees and root vegetables such as potatoes or carrots, are less suitable. To start your hydroponic journey, familiarize yourself with the system setup and choose plants that fit well within your available space.

Vertical Hydroponic Garden V2.

by Benjamin_Geils in Living AUTODESK Instructables

To start, make four lines equidistant apart along the side of the pipe. These will be about 3 1/2" apart and should divide into quarters. Next, make seven points along each line spaced 5" apart vertically. At this point, it's time to drill the holes. If your reservoir bin allows for more space, you could add additional rows. The spade bit is exactly the same diameter as the outside of the PVC elbows, so I had to rock the drill side to side in order to widen the holes for the elbows. Once all the holes are drilled, you can put silicone around the elbow and press-fit them into the holes. You can also scrape the excess silicone off with a little spade. The pump I used was too big to fit in the pipe, so I had to also drill holes around the bottom to feed the water tube through and to let the water recycle back into the reservoir.

Making a Cheap Hydroponic System, the Kratky Way

by Hydromaniac101 in Living AUTODESK Instructables

First of all I am by no means an expert in hydroponics. Like most people on this site I enjoy tinkering or playing in my workshop and definitely growing things. I am also by nature cheap and like everyone else we watch our money so that being said, being cheap and growing our own food which we all know is the best food there is, is for us the way to go.

There are many different methods of hydroponics and they can cost up to thousands of dollars. I want to show you a way that you can grow good food very cheaply, very quickly and put on your family's plate. I am not saying my way of doing things is the best way but for my family it works well.

Understanding Hydroponics

by dutchypoodle in Workshop AUTODESK Instructables

This instructable will explain household hydroponics, with the intention of growing edible flora.

In layman's terms, hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil-- although the plants may or may not be suspended in a solid medium such as gravel, or expanded clay balls. Soil retains minerals and nutrients, which "feed" flora, as we all know. Plant roots can't absorb dirt, however; when water passes through soil, it dissolves and collects some of the nutrient particles embedded. This "food" solution is absorbable as a liquid. As you can see, the soil itself is not an integral part of a plant's feeding cycle-- it is simply a stabilizer for the roots, and a convenient filter.

Hydroponics With Reclaimed Materials

by pumpkinhead24 in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Hydroponics is something that has interested me for quite a while. One of my projects a few years ago was based on the Deep Water Culture technique, where plants were suspended in a nutrient rich reservoir as an airstone aerates the roots. While this was sufficient, I couldn't grow anything but creepers and the reservoir was difficult for changing out the water. The experience and ideas stayed in the back of my mind over the past few years.
Vertical Hydroponic Farm

by BLT Robotics in Workshop AUTODESK Instructables

The word hydroponics technically means working water, stemming from the Latin words "hydro" meaning water, and "ponos" meaning labor. Many different civilizations from the beginning of time have relied on hydroponics for growing plants, such as the early Mexican and Egyptian civilizations. However, recently growing hydroponically has grown in popularity and use across many different markets.
First-timer Hydroponic: the Wick System Incl. Vermiponics and Major Fail

Hydroponic Ideas

by Graham L in Workshop AUTODESK Instructables

I have not published in a while as I have been designing new hyroponic systems.

This instructable is not how to build the systems but to show what can be done with a little bit of insight and a lot of help from above. I am a huge fan of aquaponics, but due to massive fish losses through load shedding (South Africa), I deceided to try my hand at pure hydroponics. In the steps that follow are some ideas that have proven workable and efficient and have shown exceptional plant production. I hope that this will inspire others to think out of the box and enjoy the friuts, (in this case veggies and herbs), of your labour.

JunkyardHydro - a Modular Ebb and Flow DIY Hydroponics System

by KSNewbie123 in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Hello! I reside in Canada and in this instructable I will be showing you how to convert junk materials and appliances/objects in disuse into a modular ebb and flow hydroponics system. I recently got interested in hydroponics as well as other self-sustaining systems, so I decided to create one out of waste materials. I will also be outlining 2 methods in order to create the water delivery system to make this hydroponic setup work. One simply uses a water pump or a small fish tank filter, while the other design uses an air pump in conjunction with a large water bottle. I opted to go with using an actual water pump/filter method for the final system, but I also explain how to make a water pump using an air pump as well.

Decide upon the length of the Hydroponic garden rows you want. I'd recommend around 3 feet. Then, cut 3 PVC pipes of the decided length. Also cut the thinnest PVC pipe around a foot long. Now, drill (Rubber Hose size) holes on 2 of the endcaps with the bottom of the hole right below the center of the endcap. Drill one hole using the approximately 3/4 inch drill bit (for the smallest PVC pipe) in the bottom the the bottom pipe. Now, drill holes using the largest diameter drill bit on one side of the 3 large PVC pipe, make sure the holes are all aligned. They should be spaced about 3-4 inches apart from each other. Attach the endcaps to the PVC pipes. Insert the smallest pipe into the corresponding hole until the pipe reaches about half-way into the tube. Seal and secure the last pipe using waterproof glue/sealant.
Small NFT Hydroponics System

Hydroponics is a type of agriculture that uses no dirt, and usually results in larger, fuller plants. I recently became interested in the topic, and decided to start my own vegetable garden using the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). It involves a channel of nutrient enriched water constantly flowing past a plant's roots. The system that I'm demonstrating here is just one example of infinitely many possibilities. Take my work and use it as inspiration for developing a system that suits you and your needs.

Modular Hydroponics System

by andre_125 in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Hydroponics systems use up to 95% less water than traditional agriculture. Since most systems are completely closed loops where very little water can leave (or erode the local ecosystem), hydroponic growers are very effective when used and managed correctly.

Using a hydroponics system also allows plants to be grown year-round, as opposed to the common growing seasons dictated by the weather. Droughts and weather events also have less of an impact on hydroponics systems because they are usually indoors and carefully temperature controlled. This also allows a bigger variety of plants to be grown wherever the farmer sees fit.

Hydroponics Setup on Wheels

by TheCoffeeDude in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Over the course of several years and many failed experiments in creating low cost, versatile, and effective hydroponic options, this is the result. Using fairly common components, it is possible to create a hydroponics setup on wheels that can be configured to meet a plethora of hydroponic options, and stay relatively compact. By sandwiching several of these rolling setups together, it is possible to simply slide out one at a time to work on your plants. This can effectively double or triple the growing space in a very small area. Using less than 10 square feet of my basement utility room, I can grow enough vegetables to keep myself in hot peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, and other vegetables year round. When supplemented in the Spring and Summer with crops my deck container garden, I don't have to buy vegetables or herbs at the store at all, and I can trade at the farmer's markets for variety.

We will look at the lighting, the cooling system, a few safety features, timers, and the basic grow chamber (where the growing takes place).

Organic Hydroponics, Small Scale

by budhaztm in Living AUTODESK Instructables

Ever since I was small I had wanted to be an electrical engineer, but I found a stronger love for plants and all of the fun chemistry that goes on within them. I am attending college to learn instead of just get a degree, as my life goal is to own my own production nursery where I can experiment with any plant I desire and grow tropical fruits locally in Oregon.

Tropical plants intrigue me the most. I currently have two Starfruit trees and a bunch of Cherimoya seedlings (one of them is really cool). One of my favorites is my Mimosa pudica, it's one of the sensitive plants and reacts to touch.

33 Plants That Can Grow in Water Indoors

by Jamie McIntosh 14/2/25 the spruce

Many common houseplants are genetically programmed to form roots from cuttings when exposed to constant moisture. Indoor gardeners can use this survival adaptation to grow their favorite houseplants without soil in glass jars or vases.

Plants that grow in water are a great option for kitchens, since they won’t bring in any dirt, or bathrooms, as their overall, propagated look leans minimalist and soothing. Several flowering plants can thrive when grown hydroponically, like orchids, lotus, and paperwhites. They can live this way for their entire natural life.

How Hydroponics Works

by Bambi Turner howstuffworks

If you've ever placed a plant clipping into a glass of water in the hopes that it will develop roots, you've practiced in a form of hydroponics. Hydroponics is a branch of agriculture where plants are grown without the use of soil. The nutrients that the plants normally derive from the soil are simply dissolved into water instead, and depending on the type of hydroponic system used, the plant's roots are suspended in, flooded with or misted with the nutrient solution so that the plant can derive the elements it needs for growth.

Use a compass to mark the Netpot that sits in the middle of your lid. Now it depends on the space you have on your lid, if there is space for more than one Netpot like in my case, add the diameter of your netpots plus 1cm (9cm) and mark a point 9cm next to the middle.

My Indoor DWC Hydroponics System

This instructable will cover the build and operation of a deep water culture hydroponics system. So far, I have successfully grown banana peppers in this setup with complete ease since most of the process is automated.

Also, these plants were grown indoors completely under artificial light that outputs about 60 watts. The entire unit requires about 65 watts and runs for about 16 hours every 24 hours. It costs about 9 cents a day to run it. When I first wrote this instructable it was about a month before I planted anything in it. Since then I have made many modifications to the hydroponics system such as a third light and a more advanced electrical system. I'm soon going to make a fabric cover for it with built in fans for air circulation. As a result you'll see some old and new pictures mixed together. Please bear with me until I find enough time to re-write the whole thing. This instructable will cover the build and operation of a deep water culture hydroponics system. Deep Water Hydroponic Garden Builder's Guide

by GreenBiteHydro in Workshop AUTODESK Instructables

Deep water culture is the oldest hydroponic gardening system, and one of the simplest, a platform of planters simply floats in the nutrient reservoir while the roots of the plants dangle in the advanced nutrient solution. Deep water culture hydroponic gardening is basically a highly oxygenated bubble system that emits super oxygenated advanced nutrient solution directly on plant roots. A deep water hydroponic gardening system will allow you to provide nutrients to plants immediately, so plants will experience stronger growth.

Hydroponics for Home Growers

by USDA

Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants using a water-based nutrient solution rather than soil, and can include an aggregate substrate, or growing media, such as vermiculite, coconut coir, or perlite. Hydroponic production systems are used by small farmers, hobbyists, and commercial enterprises.

According to USDA: "Growing plants in water culture or sand culture without soil are procedures that have been used by physiologists studying plant nutrition and by other plant scientists for more than a century." (Growing Crops Without Soil. Beltsville, MD: USDA, rev 1965.)

What Are Hydroponic Systems and How Do They Work?

by John Woodard 26/8/19 Fresh Water Systems

Hydroponics, a Latin word meaning “working water,” is the art of gardening without soil. In the absence of soil, water works to provide nutrients, hydration, and oxygen to plant life. From watermelons to jalapeños to orchids, plants flourish under the careful regimen of hydroponics. Using minimal space, 90% less water than traditional agriculture, and ingenious design, hydroponic gardens grow beautiful fruits and flowers in half the time.

Can you explain how a hydroponic garden works? Does it require soil or just water and nutrients?

by Quora

There are different methods of irrigating the roots. Flooding or partial flooding, where a pump fills a trough or a tray, which then drains out to a holding tank again to air the roots a little, and then gets reused later. This system needs to be kept clean from germs, which can infect a whole supply of plants being watered by the one source. This saves a lot of water though, if water is in extremely short supply.

You can use drip irrigation or sprinklers to “water and waste”. This will require a substrate that retains water better than marbles or river sand, or the plants will dry out too rapidly. Pine bark is good for that, or a finer grit (clean) sand. You'll need to compensate extra nitrogen though for the pine bark because the nitrogen will get used up trying to decompose the bark, and the plant will run short. Sand does dry out fast, so may require extra irrigation cycles. It depends on the volume that the container holds, whether it is a seedling tray with really small cavities, or a grow bag that can come in various sizes.

Hydroponic gardening

Way back in the day I made a pretty sophisticated DIY aeroponic garden that was awesome. Then I decided that outdoors was the way to go so I set up a NFT system which I had the smallest possible reservoir everything made out of 4 inch PVC. I used an airtight 5 gallon container with a pipe to keep the reservoir filled to minimum capacity. So there was always nutrient solution and or water that was fresh because it had to always be replenished from the new supply. With that system I had an airlift pump that lifted the highly oxygenated water from the tiny reservoir back into the system nonstop.
What are the advantages of hydroponics?

by Gardening & Landscaping

There are a few 'advantages' to growing plants via hydroponics. It is mostly just a way to grow plants in a different environment (indoors, or in a non-native environment). Just like growing vegetables in a greenhouse wouldn't per se be 'better' than growing them in a field. There are advantages to both: a greenhouse allows you to grow things that aren't naturally suited to your environment, whereas a field would allow you to a much larger quantity of plants per cost. Hydroponic is just another way to suit a person's tastes/needs in a growing environment.
12 Pros & Cons of Hydroponic Farming

by EARTH.ORG

Nowadays, food-growing techniques depend heavily on pesticides and chemicals, which negatively impact the water and soil. Water and soil pollution, along with large-scale depletion of the topsoil, speed up climate change. Phenomena related to it are affecting the ability of the land to grow crops, leading to worldwide food shortages. In recent years, agricultural practices have seen a major shift towards sustainable food-growing methods, including permaculture, crop rotation, polyculture, and hydroponic farming. We take a look at the latter and analyze its potential benefits and disadvantages.
Hydroponics: A Brief Guide to Growing Food Without Soil

by Extension

Hydroponic systems can be classified as either water-culture or medium-culture. Water culture systems do not use a medium to support the roots, only the nutrient solution. Medium culture systems use a solid substrate, such as sand, to support the plant root structure. Systems can be either open or closed. In an open system, the nutrient solution flows past the roots, and the solution is not recycled. In a closed system, the surplus nutrient solution is recovered, recharged and recycled through the system.

10 Benefits of Hydroponics & Its Impact on Agriculture

by edengreen TECHNOLOGYThe first and most clear benefit of hydroponics is that this growing method needs no soil. Why does this matter? Land degradation is a

Serious problem facing agriculture and the world today. As soil degrades, it becomes more and more difficult to farm in it.

Land degradation happens through both physical and chemical methods. Physical degradation relates to natural erosion and physical disturbance, as farming equipment may cause. Chemical degradation happens due to pollution and other types of contamination. Both kinds of degradation result in soil with fewer nutrients and less suited to growing healthy crops. Hydroponic crops don’t contribute to soil degradation, so they can help slow land degradation. These crops aren’t affected by the results of this crisis either since they don’t rely on healthy topsoil for their nutrients.

Hydroponics at Home

by Jonathan Ebba 8/23

Whatever type of system is used, water levels must be maintained and roots must not dry out. As plants take up water and release it through their leaves (transpiration), the water level in the system will drop and must be replenished. You will need to monitor the water level in your system regularly. When designing your system, think about whether roots might dry out with rising or falling water levels.

Although water in the system is absolutely critical, some people put more importance on water quality than is necessary. Use water that’s safe to drink for your hydroponics system. Water from a well or from a municipal supply is fine. A lot is made of water pH in hydroponics, and for commercial producers, correct pH is important to maximize uptake of micronutrients, but fine-tuning water pH can be difficult and expensive. For home hydroponics a water pH between 5.5 and 7.0 is fine. As far as other elements dissolved in the water (minerals, “hardness”, chloride, etc.), a commercial producer will mix up exactly the nutrients needed for the crop so knowing the level of these nutrients already in the water will allow her to save money by including less of these. You are likely to use a pre-formulated fertilizer, however, so knowing the concentration of plant nutrients already in your water will be of little value.

How to Grow Hydroponic Plants

by Shir Gutman permies.com

The premise is it uses no soil, and instead uses inert mediums such as rock wool, clay pebbles, sand, coconut hulls and others as the "soil" for the roots to grow in. There are also techniques that don't involve any mediums and the plant is held upright in a netted cup and the roots just grow in water. The water must be oxygenated and not allowed to go anaerobic. It requires buying special fertilizers that have all nutrients in a ionic or chelated form, ready to be taken up by the plants roots without the aid of microbial activity. There are microbial and fungal products on the market to put some biological activity in the water. That's my simple layman definition of the gist of how it works.
